I'm a cisgender with a question. Before I ask my question, I just want to say that I'm not planning to change my gender, so I'm perfectly fine with who I am.

Now back to the subject. I'm on dutasteride (brand Avodart)  for 8 months now without any side effects to treat androgenetic alopecia/male pattern baldness. So far I'm doing pretty great, but I'm afraid that my condition will worsen later, because my dad went bald at a young age. Now I'm planning to get on oral spironolactone g as well. And yes, I read all about the possible side effects, especially about gynecomastia (breast growth). But recently I heard that spironolactone  can turn you into a transsexual, which I want to avoid. Is it true that it is considered a HRT? How can I avoid feminization, while being on the drug along with dutasteride? I've also heard that spironolactone  is used to cure acne, which is also found along males.

Can I use dutasteride along with oral spironolactone or only MtF/FtM transition people?

I'd consult a doctor about this. You're risking sterility and osteoporosis (very bad), not just gynecomastia.

As long as you don't take estrogen you won't seriously transition to female.

About few weeks I have an appointment with my dermatologist. She will take blood tests before trying oral spiro  for 3 months. I wish I could lower the dose, but it's only effective on .

So spironolactone won't feminize me? How big are the chances to get side effects, like gynaecomastia, sterility, etc?

Here is some information that we like to share with new members:

Results vary by individual and it is hard to generalize, hence the advice to talk to your doctor.

For the following keep in mind that I also take Estrogen and I can only describe the combination of the two medications:

I did start with a lower dose but it had to be increased. Testosterone levels went down fairly quick and after 18 months are barely measurable. Libido dropped after about 3 months but came back somewhat after 12. I had very light breast growth.

As I said, it is the combination of the two meds and I really don't know what would have happened on Spiro alone.

Brest growth and a drop in libido is a well known and very common side effect due to the suppressed testosterone.  How much depends on the individual...

I forgot the to mention the possible reduction/loss in sex drive, erections, and lack of energy.

I don't know what any of the risks are. Its not an issue for most transwomen, and we go so much further anyway.

You could get a second medical opinion, or just accept the hair loss.
