Hello lovely ladies :)
So I'm considering buying my first new bra (eep!! :D ) and I have a question about sizing. So Internet tutorials have told me that to get the size you measure the band and round up to the nearest even number, measure the bust and round up to the nearest number and then subtract one from the other. So far so good.
The bit I'm confused about is when doing the subtracting for cup size, do you use the "true" measurement, or the rounded one? My measurements came out as band: dead on 37 (so round up to 38) and bust: dead on 39. So depending which you use would give me either a size A or B (which made me rather warm inside, seeing as I haven't even had HRT or anything). If it's the first it seems weird to me that if my measurements were the same difference but an inch bigger or smaller each I'd be a different letter...

Thanks for any light you can shed on the issue :)

You might find it helpful to look at pictures of 38A and 38B breasts on plastic surgeon websites to give you an idea of the volume of each in comparison to your own. In general a bad size up/cup size down is the same (ie 34B = 36A).

Bra size calculators and charts are... problematic for mtf at best. You are better off going and having an actual fitting.

Honestly I went to Victoria's Secret they had no problem sizing me helping me pick out the perfect bra or anyting it was wonderful best experience ever so my advice Victoria's Secret I don't know if I would buy from there because they are expensive $70 for one bra but the comfort that that one bra has is amazing you don't even know you're wearing it it's so soft and it's a Different Cloth than what Walmart or Kmart or target sells so it is amazing

The sizing formulas are a guide as to which rack to start looking on.  But unless you have money to burn, you need to try them on.

The first couple of times shopping for a bra in boy mode were an adventure, for sure!  But I had my wife along for moral support, which helped a lot.  In one store, I used the fitting rooms in the lingerie department.  I only got one dirty look, but I kept my head high and pretended I owned the place.  In the other store, I used the men's fitting room.  No one cared.

Bra sizing was, for me at least, trial and error. Even though I know my size, bra's are problematic at times for most of us. I know it takes a lot of courage the first couple of times but get fitted and try them on. Unless you are only go to wear it for a very short time, your bra needs to be comfortable.

That's great advice, and exactly what I did. The girl at Victoria's Secret asked what size I usually wear and I told her I was transgender, just grew the boobs, and  this would be my first bra. She was super excited and made it a very pleasant experience. She measured me at a little over 36A and suggested I buy a 36B to grow into.

Transitioning is full of scary/embarrassing moments, I  suggest you just pull up to the store, gather your courage, walk in and simply say "I'd like a fitting, please."

Hugs, Devlyn

Yeah Victoria's Secret is awesome still expensive but awesome but when I went the first time I was super nervous and a little scared and that's usually not me but I had a friend with me that I met here in Susans that is also transgender and she had no problem coming in with me and being there for me it made me a lot more comfortable

Thank you all for the advice :) I definitely see what you're all saying about the advantages of a fitting vs trusting the sizing charts. And there was me hoping it would be a nice, easy case of plug in the numbers and away you go. I'll have a think about this... the problem is I don't think I'm ready yet to stand in front of someone (even a stranger) and tell them, or have it be obvious from what I'm doing. I get quite bad social anxiety at the best of times so it's terrifying just thinking about it. Something like a first fitting I would want to be a really happy, positive experience and with how I feel right now I think all those negative emotions would overshadow it :( So maybe I'm better off holding off for a while till I'm ready. Which would be disappointing, but like you say, better than wasting money.
In the meantime I've found the cutest emerald green nightdress, so I may console myself by just getting that instead lol

Ebay can be your friend here. If u have a rough idea buy a couple of ones that work out the cheapest and a pack of extenders just incase its too tight. Once your happy with your sizing you can then look to get some of a better quality.

That's a really good idea :) I must admit I'd had a quick scan on there already and there are some for about £5. I was worrying that being cheap from eBay I'd probably get what I pay for, but if I view it more as a sizing tool than a permanent wardrobe addition then it doesn't matter so much if it falls apart after a week
I have some browsing to do in the morning then :) Me excited about clothes shopping - well this never happened before lol!

All my  bras cost $10 I like them and feel zero need to spend a lot of money on a bra. :)

May I also offer a suggestion - make sure you realize the difference between t-shirt bras and lace....
I made the rookie mistake when first buying - of buying a black lace bra and a white lace bra - they look great by themselves except they are lace - meaning what you wear on top of them can become dimpled, obvious and awkward looking - this is why t-shirt bras were invented - smooth cups that make your shirt/blouse sit smoothly on top.

Even though I measured myself using online calulator - I found I was either a aus/nz 16a or 18a - having lost a bit of weight a while ago I now sit very comfortably in a 16a and so have just bought another 2 bras on sale, t-shirt bras...they look great on and under clothes!

Both times I found buying them and other stuff - terrifying -....BUT having chickened out the very first time I went to buy I found myself very depressed and sad and I kept asking myself - why let a bunch of strangers stop me from what I really want to do?....
Yes I could buy them on the net BUT this is part of the female experience! - I'm not bothered by the staff, just worried I might bump into someone I know - but you find you have to make a choice - pleasing other people or pleasing yourself - I decided I needed this for me!!

Find your courage,

Sonja.

I know you said you have social anxiety problems, but you could try to work towards a fitting.  Perhaps having someone go with you might help.  I booked my first bra fitting presenting completely male.  The woman at the lingerie counter didn't even raise her eyebrows - just opened the book and said "We don't have anything before Tuesday".  Then one of the fitters said "If you come in as male, you'll have to go in the men's changing room.  If you come in as female I'm happy to take you in here".  They have seen trans-women before!

I prefer the lace over t shirt for boy mode, theres no getting away from the fact its obv i have the girls anyway, found theres a big size diff between lace and t shirt, lace will hug you better while the t shirt ones due to the padding hold the shape so makes them look bigger as a result. Got to choose between the lace showing alittle through a t shirt or a bigger bust showing imo.

Its a bit of trial and error.

Hugs

No end of information: http://www.bratabase.com 'Bra fitting for trans women' is a Google search that will yield more info specific to our needs.  Our more robust frames mean that we have boobs that are more splayed out than the average ciswoman.

From a ciswoman with an unusual size (32H):
1. Everyone has to try bras on to purchase.  Even ciswomen.  Welcome to being female!  (and yes, it can be annoying.)  I hear menswear really does work in terms of literal measurements.  Womenswear is often devoid of logic.  The band size is usually somewhat reliable though.

2. Victoria's secret is useful for being mainstream, having an online catalogue+ myriad stores to work with, and if they still operate the way they used to, online coupons (I haven't used them in say, a decade?  I sized out of them.)
-but be aware last time I tried them, it seems they do vanity sizing- at one point I knew my band size and theirs was bigger than it should have been.
-some of them have done some very lazy fittings when I've been in there.  I've also seen super lazy fittings in other, pricier stores, alas.  (ie, clerks who just wanna shove you into a bra and get it over with, don't do the fitting properly.)
-A friend of mine recommended aerie- not sure of their size ranges because I don't fit them either, and they seem to cater more to the teen/ youngish population, but pricing should theoretically be reasonable.

3. Some places like figleaves will let you purchase it online and return it, although they are based in the UK so it ships from there.  They also have a wider range of sizes than VS does, even if their panties were terribly boring last I checked.  VS does have cute cotton panties (not using cotton in the crotch is asking for a yeast infection), even if they aren't as good as they used to be.

4. Aside from the literal measurements, I would look at the advice online that shows you what a bra that properly fits looks like.  At one point figleaves had a good tutorial, not sure if it's still there.  Check for pictures- things like the center of the bra (near sternum) should be flush against the chest with most bras, where the band size should lie, which hook you should fit when first purchased to allow room for fabric stretching, etc.

Sorry that this update has been a long time coming, but I took the advice of Shambles and ordered from eBay and it finally arrived last weekend! :D (delivery from I'm guessing China and then a postage error... thank God for discreet packaging is all I'll say!)
The band size was woefully wrong, so the extenders were a very useful suggestion. Apart from that though, it's brilliant! Even leaving aside the psychological positives, I've discovered a comfort and support I never knew I was missing (even without having a great deal there). Today I didn't need to leave my house so I wore it all day, and it was like being given a permanent, gentle hug. The only downside was the amount of time lost pausing in front of any reflective surface lol!

Yes unfortunately one problem just like when you order from wish.com if you order from any places that deliver from China the product is usually made in China and tend to be a size smaller than what you would require in u.s. sizes but it is good to see that they outfit is a comfortable fit for you very happy to hear that

So, I don't wear a bra, not normally. I mean, they are a good size c but how did my one friend say, They are perky and ready to face the day. I do have bras though and it took quite a while to find some that fit perfectly, in the end I got fit at a bridal boutique. They are expensive but fit so well that they are completely comfortable all day. They are like a hair dresser, forever to find the right one but when you leave you realize that they are worth every effort and every penny.

I have to warn you, all of those sexy things, it is easy to overspend every time I go there. My boyfriend never complains though, imagine that.

It seems that you have found something that works.  :) A very important rite of passage.
Big hug!
