So I'm watching the BBC news this morning, and there have been two deaths from this surgery. Further, the death rate is being reported at 1 in 3,000 for this surgery.   

Those aren't the kind of odds I'd ever gamble with, especially over my ass. Just wondering what everyone thinks about this as far as the risks, and knowledge of the risks.

I have a few cis gender friends who have had this done and my view of it is as long as its done in a reputable nation for medical standards its a pretty safe procedure. The Dominican Republic and Mexico with all due respect won't have the same rigour of standards that the States or particularly the UK will Have.

All surgeries have their risks however a BBL Alone is not a particularly dangerous surgery if done alone. The problem arises in that some ladies or guys want to value seek and combine it with excessive lipo and even breast implants at the same time! Not advised. The longer you are under and the more you do at one time the harder it is to be safe.

Someone like Dr Aslani in Spain does lots of these ops is very good and no fatalities.
Dr Hassan in the UK is excellent too and the States there's so many good doctors for this procedure.

All I can say is people should not try to save 6000 usd by going out of Europe or America... And if they do pick the top surgeons...

Lastly, would I have it done? No as I am lean and would burn up the fat. Also fat transfer while a amazing procedure cannot guarantee even distribution like a implant can....

There were 32 deaths, and "Twenty-five fatalities were confirmed in the United States over the last 5 years through of autopsy reports and interviews with surgeons and medical examiners."

Actually, no..... 1 death in 3,000 procedures makes it THE most dangerous cosmetic surgery in the world. 

I think we do need to consider that the mortality statistics include all recorded deaths, not just those by certified, licensed surgeons. Please make sure you always use a licensed plastic surgeon!

I wonder what the statistics are like when limiting to licensed practitioners? I would think it's much lower.

Take out all the surgery done outside of the EU and the States for licenced surgeons then the figure is likely to be alot different...... Also can you show me where this figure comes from?

Even at 1 in 3000 in percentage terms that's less than 0.033....

While I won't dismiss any surgery has risks, I will say for the healthy person with no pre existing heart issues,its pretty safe...... My concern would be the results won't compliment my athletic look rather than health risks..

Let's face it hormones, surgery all has risks.   Anything under 0.1% I won't worry about.....

Hi Devlyn, yes I just saw it. Its there so I can see it all, thanks. I'm still not seeing a huge issue personally.

I would say I do lean towards do it anyway as long as the surgeon is licensed and ideally UK based. I may be bias but I think UK has highest regulatory standards in the world!
Of course a top Hollywood surgeon is going to be amazing too, Terry Dubrow for example.

I had an orchi, 1 in 100,000 people die after that. 1 in 3,000 dying from a butt lift is orders of magnitude worse, and as I said earlier, not a risk I'd be comfortable with.

I'd be curious about the surgeons that performed the surgeries which resulted in death... any popular cosmetic surgery will have a large influx of unqualified practitioners that wish to get in on the money. Much like breast augmentation of the 80s, and liposuction of the 90s.

I'm not a doctor, but the explanation for the deaths is that if the injected fat ges into a vein directly, or into a vein nicked during the insertion, it can travel to the brain and cause an embolism. I'm not sure if that's attributable to the skills of the surgeon, or just blind luck.

I went with a friend who wanted to have liposuction done. I was there to make sure she didn't agree to a procedure that might endanger her life (she's somewhat impulsive!).

I saw a couple of red flags in the facility that was making me hesitate to let her go forward but the deal breaker was when I asked the Assistant (clearly she was there to sell a procedure) where is the liposuction done. She looked at me as if I was stupid. "Why it's done here in the office."

That was the deal breaker. The office was not affiliated with a hospital (or near one). If there is a medical life threatening situation, what is the contingency plan?

I'd have to question where these butt lifts are being done? Is the person doing these procedure licensed? What is his or her track record?

That's the problem with some cosmetic surgery.  A while ago, someone in the Toronto area was convicted for killing a woman who was getting liposuction.  That person might have been a nurse, but certainly not a doctor, let alone plastic surgeon.  She did the procedures in a hotel room, without adequate medical support.  There have been many cases over the years where people, often with fraudulent credentials, have performed surgery they're not qualified to do.  I bet these people are the ones who push up the injury & death rate well above those of a competent surgeon.

I think that wearing a Spanx lower body shaper or something else that lifts up the butt is definitely safer than that butt lift procedure; but I realize with wearing the exposed buns bathing suits or really short shorts or skirts that bodywear may not be acceptable.

It is regrettable that there have been deaths with that procedure.
