Hi all,

I'm 28 years old and I had my SRS surgery with the well known Phil Thomas over a year ago.

My sex life is great,  I have been very sexually active, and enjoying orgasms through sex and masturbation. The function of the vagina he gave me I can't fault. However, over the past six months or so I have become very upset with the cosmetic appearance.

Both my labias have become misshapen and one has twisted and looks horrible. My clit has gone from being central to sticking to one side of my clitoral hood. Quite frankly, it looks a mess down there, and it does not look natural.  I was a private patient who paid 12.5K for this and put myself into debt to get the surgery, and I'm not happy at all.

Phil told me I was a good candidate and to expect good results because I had foreskin and I was young and in shape. I am also very passable. The most passable MTF Phil said he has ever seen, and in a  strange way that makes it worse, because my  vagina does not match the rest of me. I don't know if being so sexually active has caused this issue, but if that's the case then the vagina is not reliable? I was never told that I could not have sex everyday? I didn't start having sex until I had the go ahead 3 months post op.

I have asked to have a cosmetic touch up, free of charge, but they have no responded to me. Where do I stand if I want to complain? Has anyone else had this issue with Phil's work?   I feel cheated and distressed.

Please give me your thoughts.

Much love x

Hi.  I'm sorry to hear your appearance isn't as you wish, but it sounds like everything else is great.  TBH, we all heal differently, and in the manner our bodies seem to want to go.  That you feel your body isn't quite right is something to speak with the doctor about.  I'm sure there is something that can be done.  You may end up paying for the hospital time and anesthesia doctor.
But now old friends they're acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day.

My foundation sponsors Thais for srs and we are constantly faced with cosmetic issues. The most important is the depth and orgasms, which you have. The cosmetic corrections are normally not free but can be discounted. The serious problem rate in GRS from our experience runs at 10% and patients unhappy about cosmetic outcome runs at around 20 pct. So your situation is not a rare occurance.
When we first start our journey the perception and moral values all dramatically change in wonderment. As we evolve further it all becomes normal again but the journey has changed us forever.

What would you class as a serious problem?

Severe swelling causes significant issues. The whole aesthetics of the vagina is serioisly compromized e.g loss of a labia minora from dead skin, severe scar tissue. Other serious issues are severe scar granulation,  constant pain after 6 weeks in vagina. We have not experienced loss of sensitivity, and a prolapsed vagina which I have recently heard about but not from our selected beneficieries.

Marci Bowers has a niche with cosmetic corrections she would be the person to talk to but she has a pretty long waiting list.

Hello,

I had my SRS a few years ago with Mr Thomas and i've also had a lot of problems.

I had to have a lot of excessive erectile tissue removed over 2 more operations and even now I'm not really able to be intimate because of the enormous amount my clitoral area still swells, It results in the hood being really stretched by the erect clitoris behind making all the skin pull if i try to penetrate myself which is very uncomfortable. It effectively renders penetration when aroused impossible making it unusable for sex. Unfortunately its made me feel so self conscious and disgusted by my genitals. I have nightmares about it around twice a week. It really does look like the site of a wound and reconstruction and i can not see how anyone would find it attractive or even just palatable.

The cosmetic appearance is good unless I spread my legs completely and then it is poor.

I went to another Surgeon for a second opinion and they said it was a good result and any further work would just cause more scarring. They also advised that nobody would be willing to try and fix the clitoris as it has sensation and it could be lost if a correction is made.

I never really felt that he or his team with the exception of one of his nurses took my concerns 100% seriously.n I want to contact them again about it but I have the feeling that they don't want to hear from me again.

overall i'd say the experience and result has been disappointing and damaged my life. I wish id have gone elsewhere but its too late now.

Thats my experience to compare.

Something like 1/3 to 1/2 her time spent is doing revisions, according to an interview/article I saw a while back - many of them for the same surgeons.

Update:

I think I'm going to have to make a cirb complaint to the hospital because they have told me I can have Cosmetic  touch ups but I will have to pay because they saw me in April and I said that I wanted to see how I got on over the next few months to see if it git worse or anything and they've said that I said I didn't want anything done. They never said to me that was my last chance to get it free of charge.

I've akready paid 12500 and they expect me to pay for corrections I shouldn't even need. I think that is appalling. Especially for someone with his reputation.

They've now told me to contact my GP for a referral which seems very random and to contact CCG???

That does seem pretty odd, I know the NHS complaints are handled by PALS. Maybe it's worth asking them as well? I know you were a private patient but they must have an idea on where to direct you/process you need to follow?

I got your PM buffy. Unfortunately this website won't let me PM you back. I am not still in contact with them and at the moment I'm not sure if I'm mentaly strong enough to deal with them. I'm also not sure I'd trust them to do anything else to me and I'll probably just try another surgeon in the US or elsewhere in europe in a year or two as I also don't think I can handle another operation or procedure at the moment. I'm just trying to come to terms with what has been done to me and doing my best to avoid suicidal thoughts.

Things that you should read

When you get a chance, it would be great if you can introduce yourself in the Introductions Forum.

I am sorry to hear about the difficulties with surgery and recovery.  I think you're doing exactly the right thing at this point, researching your options and gaining advice from those in the community who have similar or additional experience.  One thing I will suggest is don't assume the second opinion is the final word on this.  Although the second surgeon advised against a potentially complicated revision, there are a few specialists in the world who have gained an excellent reputation for revisions to appearance while maintaining sensation.

I am sorry to read about your complications. It's disheartening when we put so much effort and money and get shortchanged or the work is not satisfactory. Did you sign any legal documents to see if you do have legal ammunition to get a revision? Maybe you can have the document reviewed by a pro bono lawyer to see if you have options.

I've read here that the general consensus is to wait 6 months before having sex post-op. I am surprised you were given the go-ahead at 3 months. It's such a delicate procedure.

I had my SRS in 2016 with another well-known British surgeon. I'm left with no clitoris and excess erectile tissue. I too wish I'd gone else where, only I've never been able to afford surgery which is why I had it on the NHS. It was my only option. I'm sorry that you have to pay for the corrections.
