Where to move?

I'm not sure if there is a more appropriate place to post this, so mods feel free to move if you think it should go elsewhere.

My wife and I want to move out of our current neighborhood. Crime is on the rise, school is not very good for our kids, and other issues.

I do regional sales for my employer and can live anywhere in my six state territory. I'm looking for advice on trans-friendly communities in my region.

My territory covers Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. I can live anywhere in those six states and do my job.

If you were going to transition and live in one of these states, where would you go?

I'm not a local but travel extensively for work. I'd choose a southern suburb of Milwaukee. Easy access to Chicago with a big lgbt community, docs, services, and groups. I know a few girls who live in that area, some full time some part time. Their pcp is near home, but they use Chicago for other stuff. Secondary choice maybe Duluth.

I've heard that Minneapolis is the San Francisco of the Midwest. I lived in the sea monies area for over 9 years. Like anywhere else there is variability with some things depending on where you live in given area. Schools are very good in Iowa and it's reasonable cost of living. Waukee, Urbandale, Clive, west desmoines and Johnston are good areas.

Iowa is where I currently live. The particular neighborhood and school district we live in is getting worse with an influx of people moving from Chicago. I hate to say that, but it is the truth. The crime and violence are really getting out of control. The cost of living is quite good, though. Maybe we will opt to stay in Iowa and just try to move to a more rural area. The LGBT clinic in Iowa City is quite good.

Where do you live? Cedar Rapids or Waterloo (Blackhawk County)? Iowa City would probably be the most liberal part of the state. I miss Iowa as it was a nice place to live and cheaper. Schools were great too. I don't dig the heat in AZ and the desert gets old. From Long Island originally. Too expensive to go back.

That's easy. Minnesota is the most liberal state on the list. Conservative states tend to pass laws aimed at targeting and delegitimizing transgender folks. Using us as a political punching bag. Rule of thumb.

I would agree with Minnesota but really like Wisconsin. I personally love Madison as a city but struggled with the whole college town mentality. It's a great place to live and raise a family though and it is very LGBTQ friendly. Milwaukee isn't bad but it isn't as friendly as Madison in my opinion.

Is there good support for transgender health care in that area?

How about Minnesota? Are there places there that offer good transgender health care?

I am in Cedar Rapids. It is a fairly short drive (about 30 minutes) to the LGBT clinic in Iowa City. Dr Nisly and her crew seem super great so far. I usually see one of the nurse practitioners. I'm hoping that wherever I end up moving I can find transgender specific health care that is at least as good as what I have experienced at the U of I LGBT clinic.

As far as healthcare I don't know. Ive only visited there. Im from Chicago though

You might look at the laws in each of those states for changing gender on ID if you have thoughts on going that far.

I lived in Dubuque before I moved to Colorado.

Crime is worse in every bigger city compared to CR or DBQ. Maybe IC? Or move outside of CR between Waterloo or Dubuque. The transgender laws are pretty good in Iowa and the schools are top rated. Easter Iowa is a pretty liberal part of the state.

I've lived in Minnesota also. Iowa is a lot safer than Minnesota.

Madison was my favorite city in that area though. It still has crime issues though.

They have a support group you can find on FB.

They doctor shop there. No clinic like in IC.

There are two doctors most people see. Request to join the group and tell them why you're requesting to join. I don't do Facebook anymore or I would add you.
