Old as this is, I see this stuff currently thrown around with no regard.  In particular that first myth is alive and well and continually trotted out in circles I am trying to figure out how to deal with.

It's always the most ignorant among us who think they know everything, I find.  The most common angle I hear is " If you have a penis, you're a boy....if not, you're a girl. "  Basically they don't differentiate between sex and gender, and are otherwise completely ignorant on the topic.  But failure to distinguish between sex and gender seems to be the main thing.
