I want to switch jobs but am scared because what if they ask if i have ever gone by a diffrent name.  i changed my name over a decade ago but still live in fear of being outed this way.  im stealth and never want to acknowledge my trans past(some shame) do i just hope they dont say anything or do i get in front of it.  plus im scared cause my voice still isnt great but passable when i use it. 

The only time I was asked about previous names was when I was working on a job that required a security clearance. They might ask the question if they need to do a criminal background check but other than that, they shouldn't ask. If they do ask, it should go beyond personal so your coworkers aren't going to know about your past unless you tell them.

Becky,  I have been hired for 2 jobs post transition and legal name change.  It does make it harder to switch jobs IMO but the degree of difficulty depends on your field.  But I digress per usual.

On any background check you are going to be expected to list any previous names even if it was many years ago.

The good news is that only the HR department will know assuming the employer is large enough to have one.

The nice thing about HR departments they know how important it is ethically and legally not to disclose personal information.  I really don't think your privacy or history will be disclosed to anyone unless it's a very unprofessional place.

Since I am openly trans it is not an issue for me but having worked in several large corporations I am familiar with the requirements of HR depts.  You will be fine.   Be honest with them - you don't want to lose out on a job because you were not forthcoming.
