UK publications omitting Q from LGBTI

I've noticed that pink news and gay star news have article titles mentioning LGBT or LGBTI, without Q. For example, gay star news has a slogan "empower the LGBTI world". Pink news seems to use LGBT+. Do you where that comes from? Is it just to stop adding more letters to an acronym?

For years, the acronym was LGB.  Then they added the T to make LGBT.  That has been the standard acronym for years.  After those four letters, all bets are off: there is no standard.  People add any number of letters after that to include other groups.

My own feeling is that anything more than four letters becomes unweildy and unpronounceable.  I can handle LGBT in the spoken word, and even LGBT+.  But after that, I pronounce any longer combinations as "queer".  Around here, a common long version is LGBTQIA2S+.  Really?

I understand the feelings of those who feel left out of whichever version is used.  But that is going to happen no matter how many letters you add.

I don't get offended if people use longer versions, nor if they use shorter versions.  Obviously, being trans, it would concern me if the T is left out.  But there are occasions where what is being spoken about is not relevant to trans people, so leaving the T out may be appropriate in those cases.

The bottom line, I think, is that there is no one correct version.

I like the idea of using the acronym "SAGA". It's simple, and stands for Sexuality and Gender Acceptance.

I agree.

Anyone or anything can be queer and a lot of LGBT+ people refer to themselves as queer anyway. It's reduntant

I like SAGA.

I guess the source of my concern is some cisgender lesbian transphobes saying they are not queer.

Dare I ask what the 2 stands for?
I'm guessing it means that there's two A's. I've often seen LGBTQIAA. (I believe it's Asexual and Ally.) But I've never seen the S at the end.

"2S" (or sometimes just "2") stands for Two-Spirit, a gender identity used by some First Nations people.  I do not understand the concept well enough to say what is the difference between two-spirit people and transgender people other than the ethnicity, but it is treated as a separate category.

Well that certainly makes a bit more sense than what I was mentally speculating.

I really do think that there ought to be a better term than the ever expanding alphabet soup that there is now.

Why is this so complicated. I really like SAGA.

I will make an argument for keeping the Q. Over the past year I have had the opportunity to get to know a few Q's and find them delightfully refreshing people. Most are younger and choosing to let go of boxes in order to get on with life. Spending time talking with them has really helped to expand this old lady's mind and allows me to see far broader images of life and expression than I had just struggling to transition. I can't go to where my friends have gone but I love seeing good people being happy getting out of the binary.

I like how short and sweet it is but referring to the "sexuality and gender acceptance community" as is done with the LGBTQIADLFKJASDFOIHASPUDFNSADFASJDFplusMinusSquareRoot term now sounds a bit strange.

I've also heard the "Q" referred to "questioning."

Personally, I prefer LGBT+ as well.

I've heard it used for both, depending on who you're talking to. :)

Its all a bit of a laugh when we may be LGBTQIA ect but we are really just "normal" people trying to get on with our lives. We may like being flag wavers or not.
We are just normal people trying to do the best we can with the cards we got dealt. Its always important to remember the world doesnt revolve around us & we need to be good ambassadors for the " rainbow cause " .

I wish we would just drop the whole thing by now.
May as well use all the letters of the alphabet and get it over with!

No need for these bloody tags anymore

Occasionally I have seen two Ts (for Transsexual and Transgender) and P for Pansexual.

It can be either.  Sometimes the acronum is written with two Qs, to include both.
