Coloradans switching sex designation to 'X' on IDs increasing

DENVER (KDVR) — For over five years, Coloradans have been allowed to switch their sex designation on their driver's license or identification card. Residents can do this without specific surgeries or going to court.

The option to be listed as "X" on a Colorado license started in late 2018.

This rule came after two Colorado court cases discussed sex designation on federal and state legal documents, according to a 2018 press release from the Colorado Department of Revenue.

According to the website, in Colorado, people can identify as M (male), F (female) or X on their birth certificate, driver's license and identification card.

Colorado law doesn't require residents to undergo any specific surgery, treatment, clinical care or behavioral health care to update their sex designation, said the website.

Almost half the states in the U.S. allow residents to mark M, F or X on their driver's license and have an easy-to-understand form and don't require provider certification, according to the website.

Eight states and two territories require proof of surgery, court order or amended birth certificates, and only two states don't allow for updating gender markings on driver's licenses. These two states are Florida and Kansas.

Is this a worthwhile step to take (getting an X gender marker)?

I would rather just have the F gender marker and not do this step.

Has anyone here done the X gender marker step before changing your legal ID?  Why?

Considering that the most recent (?) US Trans survey showed roughly 1/3 of the respondents identifying as non-binary, and most of the enbys I know strongly dislike being gendered either male or female, I would imagine that there would be quite a few people who would want this.

I consider myself non-binary, and the idea of having a gender marker of "X" intrigues me, and if I were 50 years younger, I might consider it.  But I've been a target for most of my life because of my inability to perform "male", and the idea of setting myself up for worse hassles doesn't appeal to me, esp. in the current political climate.

I always thought the question of 'Sex' or 'Gender' should be a 'Yes' or 'No' question.

Unless there is a two or three position blank to fill in, this option is usually not provided. 

However it has got to be nice to answer Yes for those of us who could for sure.

Or answer from that famous deli scene, "Yes!  Yes!  Yes!"
