Susan and I thank all of you for your warm wishes. For our anniversary, we visited Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs, then had lunch at Outback Steakhouse and did a little shopping. It was a quiet celebration, but that's what we prefer.

Our local deer population had been staying out of our yard for several months. Last week they finally surrendered to temptation and took advantage of our lovely buffet. They really liked our rose bushes, hydrangeas, and Black-eyed Susan. We called a local fencing company on Monday. They said they were booked out through August or September, but they would send someone out on Tuesday to give us an estimate. The neighbors on either side already have fences, so all we need is a straight fence across the back of our lot. The estimate was close to what I expected, so I asked them to put us on their schedule. They called on Wednesday and said they could set the posts Thursday and install the fence early next week. As promised, they showed up yesterday morning and installed the posts. Hopefully my temporary fence will be enough to discourage the deer until the fence is completed next week.

My dad really wants to go home, he compares the rehab facility to a jail. We plan to take him home next Friday. He can't get around without a walker, but he refuses in-home care. He thinks once he gets home and mows the yard, all will be well. He also plans to drive again, which is a frightening thought. Luckily, we don't think he is strong enough to open a garage door. My brother and his wife are out of town until 21 June, while Susan and I can only be there on occasional weekends. The 'yard man' is still under investigation, so we plan to ask about getting a restraining order against him. Knowing my dad, I expect he'll do something foolish and wind up back in the hospital soon.

Deer can jump over almost anything but I've heard they don't like double fenced, two fences spaced 5ft apart.  I left enough room to do that in my Front Yard Rose Garden.

I know deer are great jumpers, but ours must be lazy. The 3.5ft tall temporary fence has discouraged them, and they haven't visited the buffet since we put it up. The fence company called us earlier today, and they said they will be out Saturday morning to install the fence. We're getting a 4ft powder-coated iron fence. Hopefully that will continue to discourage our unwelcome diners. We could have gone with a 6ft privacy fence, but that would make me feel like I live in a box.

The doctor told my dad they want him to stay in the rehab facility for another month. He's really upset about it, but he understands. We plan to go to his house over the weekend to mow the yard and do more cleanup. We also plan to visit the following weekend, primarily because it's Father's Day, and I'm sure he would appreciate some visitors.

Thanks Courtney! It certainly takes a long time to see the results, but I'm liking what I see.

The fencing company showed up at 7:30am, so I quickly dismantled the temporary fence. There was no swordplay, but they had the fence completely installed by 9:30am. It really looks nice. Susan and I just hope the deer respect it. If not, a hunting license may be in order.

We'll be leaving soon to mow my dad's yard. It's going to be a hot weekend, but no rain is in the forecast.

Love always -- Jess

If the deer don't respect your fence you could always add a row or 2 of electric fence on top. Deer are not fond of electric and you can get some very inexpensive cattle fence chargers. They have solar and battery available if there is no 110v.

We are researching putting in a Community Garden. The Lowe's website discusses "deer fencing". It says that if the deer cannot clearly see how high a fence is, they won't try to jump it. Like a chainlink fence with a top cross-bar would be easy to tell the height. But a wire fence maybe not so much. We will see what happens.

Caught up after a few days. Venison is very tasty and delivered to your back yard sounds perfect (obviously I am joking being a veggie lol)

Good news that your dad has improved enough to be going home, but mowing the yard and driving lol and the probability of hurting himself is typical male.

So far, the deer are still respecting our fence. However, I think our neighbors would frown on turning it into a giant 'bug zapper', I think we could easily add some height if it becomes necessary.

We visited my dad again over the weekend. My brother and his wife were out of town, and it was important to have at least one child visit him for Father's Day. I decided to get the drama out of the way quickly. The detective wanted me to ask permission for them to look around my dad's property without a search warrant. Amazingly, my dad agreed. I was also surprised when my dad asked me to see about getting a restraining order against the 'yard man'. Hopefully, the detective can help with that process.

Once the drama was out of the way, I asked my dad what he would like for supper. At 5:30pm, we arrived with a fish and shrimp platter from Captain D's. The leftovers were thoroughly enjoyed by some of the backyard foragers that night -- raccoons, opossum, a fox, and even a few of his neighbor's barn cats. We also discovered that Rhonda the raccoon has four kids to feed.

On Sunday (Father's Day), we brought his favorite breakfast -- a 'Big Breakfast' from McDonalds. We also brought my dad's cell phone, he had been without it for months. We left around 9:00am to take some fresh flowers to my mom's grave, then did a little shopping on the way back to my dad's house. After dropping off a few things, we went back into town to get lunch for my dad. A two-piece fish meal from Captain D's. Around 2:00pm, we went back to my dad's house. I had not planned on it, but the grass had grown so much that I decided to mow again. It only took about 3.5 hours, and I really enjoyed the heat index of 100! We didn't get home until 9:30pm. We were both really tired, but it was a successful visit.

Although I don't personally celebrate Father's Day, I did get a card from one of my daughters. It's always nice to be remembered...

Jess,

Do they eat the flowers or stalks?  Do they kill the plants or make them look ugly?
Do you think they would eat more of these plants of yours in the winter or this time of the year?

Was it costly to fence?  Is this wrought iron fencing?  I heard you can plant things that deer do not enjoy to protect the plants they do enjoy.

I like flowers.

I had roses that they would feast upon. It didn't kill the plants, as they just ate the flowers. My landlord couldn't figure out why the roses never seemed to bloom. I caught a deer munching them at 4 a.m. There was no way to fence that area so we just gave up and let them have them.
