Mormon church issues new restrictions on transgender members

Story by Matt Lavietes (22 Aug 2024)

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, known widely as the Mormon church, issued a slew of new policies this week expanding its restrictions on transgender members.

The policies, released Monday, include rules barring trans people from working with children, becoming priests and serving as teachers. The church also expanded on an existing rule that barred trans people from being baptized.

Trans members will also face possible annotation on their membership records, grouping them with churchgoers who have committed incest, sexual predatory behavior, sexual violence against children and embezzlement of church funds.

"Church leaders counsel against pursuing surgical, medical, or social transition away from one's biological sex at birth," the church's General Handbook states. "Leaders advise that taking these actions will result in some Church membership restrictions."

This is what people do when they adhere to a 2000 year old set of writings. Made by people who lived in that time. When women were very much child-givers.

This is why you need to question if the Church meets modern life values. And how deep the collection plate is in terms of our 'Murican brethren. I would argue it doesn't. But I don't want to get into a debate on my religious views since a lot of what I think is kinda toxic, lol.

Just be careful of anyone telling you they know what's best for your "immortal soul". And look how many lamborghinis they have. :P

I saw a quote once in a small book that was written by a man as advice for his children growing up.

"When a church asks for money to build a new gymnasium, run away!"

My dad often describes "game night" during their church fundraiser each month. What he describes reminds me of Jesus flipping over tables and screaming at the money changers. I know that the money is used to pay bills and finance charities and missionary work. I'm not saying they are not doing good things, they are. But they could do so much more without paying for a new mega-cathedral.

Every Mormon I have ever met was a good, honest, and accepting person. It was not they who made these decisions. The same is true for any church. Many very good people attend. It wasn't them who decided to discriminate against anyone.

That's the thing, Lori. Religion isn't the same thing as faith. Faith requires nothing other than you and your relationship with your god. It's a very personal thing. And that's what 90% of people in the world have. It is the other 10% you have to worry about. Those who are wannabe cult leaders. Who think they can pray on faith to move mountains. These people have no morals. They just feed on the people who believe in them. Like some kind of spiritual vampire.

There is NOTHING wrong with faith. NOTHING wrong with believing in a higher power. A creator. A force leading you to how you want to live your life.

In my opinion, what is wrong is someone telling you how you have to live your life otherwise you're going to suffer eternal damnation. That is like clickbait faith.

It's between you and your god(s). That's all it ever should be.

Very much agree. Wise dude. We are only ever defined on the things we do. Not on what those around us tell us to do. It all comes down to the individual.
