After avoiding anything to do with the occult for a number of years, I am again very interested in sites with a long tradition of being haunted. I would love to stay in the Overlook Hotel or the Stanley Hotel, for that matter. I'm not sure that I would want the hotel to be empty except for me, though.
Bates Motel? No, thank you. I like to shower in peace. Besides taxidermy is out of fashion in Britain now that we have become voyeurs of nature instead of part of nature. Soon, we won't even be allowed to preserve the horns or antlers of wild animals we have eaten. I never hunted but eating venison and having horns and antlers on the wall does make me feel closer to nature. I find it spiritual, shamanic even. Labour MP Steve Reed calls it "perverse self-gratification". I respect vegetarians but I don't understand why even meat eaters have become opposed to preserving wild animal parts for display. Do they also object to the longhorns over the fireplace in Bonanza?
Perhaps it will still be okay to have our mothers stuffed and mounted like Mrs Bates, though.
