Lori real friends wouldn't want me to be mayor of NYC.... :o  but I do appreciate the confidence and your vote... and your friendship! ;D

Chrissy my practice is with a firm.  I make my hours so I get a chance to try out substitute teaching now before I retire. It gives me the best of everything.  If it doesn't work out, it will be sad but not tragic.

Nu-uh, I think you would be a great Mayoress. You would do things that matter to people. But I wouldn't want you to get caught up in the candy-coated excrement that is all politics all over the world... so... do what you can do, speak out about what you can, and leave the highest level stuff to people who like mud wrestling.

What you're doing is amazing, Emma.

Chrissy, I am very determined to make this work!

Sephirah, hence my choice to work with LGBTQ kids instead of running for mayor but that does not make me Mother Teressa... ;D

I have been trying to understand the strength of Trump in America today and this is the best answer I found:

There was no point in seeking to convert the intellectuals. For intellectuals would never be converted and would anyway always yield to the stronger, and this will always be "the man in the street." Arguments must therefore be crude, clear, and forcible, and appeal to emotions and instincts, not the intellect. Truth was unimportant and entirely subordinate to tactics and psychology.

Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister wrote that.

You will do well.  Might get frustrated at times but that will be counterweighted by satisfaction and joy to tip the scales.

Yes it does.

I don't think... how to put this... you folks in the US run elections on emotions, not facts. As do we to a lesser extent. And when you have someone who is a populist politician, they don't do facts. They do "I'm one of you. I want the same things you want. I hate the same things you do. Love the same things you do."

Propaganda is a very good approximation. People don't care what your policies are if they think you're one of them. If you play to how people feel about the world. That's what populists do very well. I don't like comparing because I think there is a lot of difference... but Hitler got the German people onside by being like Trump. And Farrage in the UK (no wonder they're best buds). It isn't about the facts, it's about the feelings. You can give people fiscal projections and statistics until you're blue in the face... but if someone comes out and says "I am like you, I like this, I hate this, and I will change the things you hate..." You're fighting an uphill battle.

Trump does very well at coming across as a victim of the "State". Everyone is out to get him. He pretends to be the little guy trying to make it big in a world where the established order is out to get him. It's utter hogwash of course, but he's so well versed in it... he can tune in to what a good chunk of the American populace feel. Not "know", but feel. He's always been about "sticking it to the man". Even when he is "the man". He knows how to push peoples' buttons. Just like Reform UK here and the whole Brexit debacle. You can get people to completely ignore logic if you appeal to emotion. It's the biggest card in the propogandist's deck. The Romans were doing it centuries ago. Why do you think they held all the Gladiatorial games? To distract people from the reality of what life was, and to focus on people killing each other because it made them feel better about themselves.

And this is why I feel like trying to fight Trump with facts is a losing cause. Because people who are emotionally invested in the stuff he comes out with... literally don't care about facts. He could literally put a penguin in a blender and people would be okay with it. Because as long as you can make them feel it was a good thing to do... that's all you need to do. It's populism at its most dangerous.

Well, you have to love politics in the US.  The mayor of NYC has been indicted, a North Carolina candidate for governor who claims he is a black Nazi, and we have a convicted felon and rapist running for President from the Republican Party, the party of Lincoln.

Definitely a wine night!

I am thick in the middle of all my required Board of Ed learning modules.  I know they are required and I can do them at home but could they pick more boring presenters? There are tests after each module and they aren't hard.

I'll get them done over the weekend.  Thankfully it's raining.

I meet with the principal and other teachers on Tuesday. I am actually excited.

Lol, it's actually a lesson. Don't be those boring presenters when you start teaching. Think of it as a what not to do! I had a teacher at school... omg he was the most utterly soul-less, boring, phone-it-in teachers you could imagine. I guess because he'd been there forever and was just tired of life... and kids. He taught geography. And made it sound about as interesting as "Grass Growing 101". He would have made a good hypnotist. 10 minutes listening to the monotone drone and you were in another state of consciousness.

Which was a huge stark contrast to my Geology teacher later on. She was full of energy, made it all seem incredible. The wonder of the natural world. Made me have a bit of a fascination with it ever since. You remember these people when you're young. For good or bad. ;)

I agree Sephirah.  I have a huge sensitivity to successful communication.  There are two types of teachers:

     1. The educational bureaucrat who only works for a living and doesn't care if people learn.  They talk
         at people.
     2. The true educator: they care about whether people learn.  They practice effective
         communication.

I truly hope I can make a difference, otherwise, what is the point?  I already have a job.

You already do that, Emma. Just think of the kids you're teaching as folks who will read your Medium articles. Put as much of yourself into that and you can't go wrong. <3

Emma,

You are charged to educate and the students are charged to learn.

What you do can enhance their learning or diminish it.

Attention spans, reading skills, medical and psychological issues, and parental involvement in their children's education, and well as the kid's responsibilities away from school, their communication skills, study support availability (such as but not limited to tutoring, technology access, counseling, advising, safe enivironments), the desire to learn, curiosity, and getting enough food and sleep are some of the variables that impact learning.

You just do your part and try NOT to be their friends.  Be friendly though.  There are substantial differences between the two.  You are an adult role model.

You have an important task with this job.  You can be successful and it requires substantial efforts to do so.  You may not succeed with each learner.  But you want each to be successful.

Do your best.  You yourself can learn too for the betterment of your skills.

I wish you much success Emma.  Your job is not an easy one.

I have heard all of this from the best of teachers I know. It makes sense to me.

Chrissy
