Democratic governors and state lawmakers across the country are mobilizing against a surge of Republican restrictions on transgender health care by establishing their states as sanctuaries for gender-affirming care.

Earlier this month, Democratic Gov. Wes Moore signed an executive order making Maryland the 11th state, plus the District of Columbia, to declare itself a sanctuary. A bill in New York has cleared the legislature and is awaiting the signature of Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Last year, California became the first state to declare itself a sanctuary. It has since been joined by Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Vermont and Washington. A growing number of cities, including New York City; Kansas City, Missouri; and West Hollywood, California, also have become sanctuaries.

These states and cities are emerging as havens with legal protections to shield health care providers, transgender people and their supporters from lawsuits and criminal penalties levied by other states.

Well, looks like I'll be moving at some point in the future.

The with and I were thinking wa state. Maybe Oregon.

I spent a few years in Washington state near Bremerton on the other side of the water from Seattle. It's not bad very beautiful state very nice Summers but the winners it's just always wet and gray.

I have visited Portland before but I've never lived in Oregon. One of my buddies in the Marines was from Eugene Oregon and I went with him for a weekend pass to his home but yeah it was never really enough to determine if I would like living in Oregon or not.

If we move it would probably be Washington Oregon California or Colorado. The east coast states are too cold during the winter and too humid during the summer. I had grown up in Ohio and I've lived in Pennsylvania and Maryland Virginia North Carolina and South Carolina throughout my entire life.

I could see maybe going back to Maryland but that's probably near the end of the list.

I live in central Arkansas, just about any state would be better. I prefer 'warm and dry', so New Mexico is on the top of my list. I would also consider moving back to Colorado. We lived there for 15 years before moving to Arkansas, but I just couldn't take the cold and snow any more. If we did go back to Colorado, it would be south of where we used to live (Monument, CO). I've already been using Zillow to search for potential houses.

I have been looking at two areas. New Mexico around Silver City / Deming area. And the Southern California desert where I grew up.

New Mexico has a lot going for it but has a shortage of LGBTQ Healthcare providers right now. CA is a sanctuary state. The big city areas are expensive but have more services available. Small towns in the desert are more affordable but can be more than an hour's drive to get to a transgender healthcare provider.

Both have easy access to the Border if needed, and both have VA facilities until gender-affirming care gets shut down. Thank us for our service? 

This just... it makes me sad. Like really sad. How trans is seemingly the new obsession. Like there isn't enough in the world to be concerned about. Like people dying all over the world, nutjobs in charge of countries (not just the US), the threat of new pandemics... and all the stuff already going on. It feels like people are disproportionately obsessed with gender politics these days. Because it's just easy to focus on the little people, rather than the big picture.

Always easy to have a target to aim for, preferably one with limited means to fight back.

The current ethos across much of the world is "Blame and hate anyone who isn't us. It'll all work out okay!"

People tried that 85 years ago. Didn't work out too well.

While I was in the Dentist's office just a short while ago, the news reported that Matt Gaetz has withdrawn from being the new Attorney General.

With the Ethics Committee Report about him having sex with two 17-year-olds, many were trying to fight the release of the report before his Senate Confirmation Hearing. By withdrawing from being picked as the new AG, the report becomes moot... because apparently, it is perfectly acceptable to have such a person as an elected official in the Federal Government, just not as an Attorney General.

No idea who this person is but... as a Brit, that isn't really a big deal. The age of consent is 16 here so... I mean... I know it's different there, and you don't like kids growing up too fast. 21 drinking age... *shakes head* Wouldn't be a massive deal here. It'd still be kind of creepy but not illegal.

All I gotta say is thank god I'm in Connecticut, would be nice if Maine enacted some protections too.

Az was I believe just made a sanctuary state. Might not have to move after all.

He was prob on Epstein's list among many other elected gov officials...

I just moved from NJ to MD and I'm happy about this, although I wish the area I lived in was more progressive.

It's amazing that trans people I know support the incoming administration. They're like "well, they hate us and they're willing to say so, and to put their words into actions, but at least the immigrants will stop coming in and food will be cheaper."

PS: food won't be cheaper and we need those immigrants
