Right, I made tacos for dinner for the first time in ages tonight and I need help 

Is there some magical way of eating them?! Every single time you bite them, the shell breaks and showers my hand/lap/face/dog with molten-hot chilli! Its not a pretty sight 

I have my fajita folding down to a T, I eat quesadillas and enchiladas with a knife and fork but tacos are meant to be eaten by hand! Am I doing something wrong!

You have to bake the shells for a few minutes to soften them. Are there any left? Hugs, Devlyn

"Taco" is the Mexican-Spanish word for "snack."  (The word also means "plug.")

If you dislike the commercial, pre-formed hard shells, just use corn tortillas and make yourself soft, rolled tacos.

I used to eat home-made tacos with soft shells just because of the crunch breakage.

Now I just put the fixin's in a bowl and toss in some crushed-up Spicy Nachos (Doritos) as if they were croutons.

Taco salada ftw!

@Devlyn - I baked the shells but they were still pretty hard and not malleable in the slightest! Maybe its a British thing - the only tacos we get are the rigid corn ones

Or spread re-fried beans on a soft tortilla and wrap it around the hard shell.  It is called a double decker, and it is from Taco Bell.

LOL... After growing up in So. Calif. and making regular visits to friends in Mexico, the generic American and fast food versions of tacos and such just make me kinda chuckle

Well, you just have to learn to appreciate it for what it is--an American version of a foreign another culture's food, like our "Chinese" food also.

I do Mexican all the time, but I rarely go with hard shell tacos. Soft tacos are much easier (and cheaper) and work just as well for me. You can just wrap a stack of regular fresh tortillas in paper towels, zap them in 'wave for 1 minute and they're ready to fold.

Today for filling, I just stir fried some chopped onion with some leftover chicken breasts and chili power. I always have some pintos around to go with it. Yummers.

Spray each one with a little butter-flavored PAM, and they won't stick together.

Mine never stick. I always separate and restack them before heating. It might depend on the brand, too. I usually by Mission.

Corn won't stick too badly, but flour tortilla almost always will in the microwave.

  There are various versions of the taco in Mexico, depending on region.  The "Mexican food" here is actually called "Southwestern Cuisine".  There are some similarities here to the northern states of Mexico.  This is like the "Chinese food" we eat, in France it is called cuisine Americain.  It is another American ethnic modification.  I do make tacos and burritos and I do plant various peppers, herbs and tomatoes in my garden and use them in my cooking year 'round.

Admittedly, I make my own versions of tacos and burritos    I tend to make carne asada tacos or burritos and add bacon



I also have jalapeno peppers, roma tomatoes, red onions and various herbs in my garden 

Tacos can be really tasty if they are made well.

Have you eaten a fish taco?  The idea of one seems wrong to me in a way but I tried two in California and they were actually pretty good.

I make homemade tacos often. You have to bake the shells a little bit. They are still crunchy and messy though so you eat them over the plate. I use stands to hold them upright.

A couple of good tacos can provide a fine meal!
