Lori,

Thank you for your attempt at providing me with some fried ice cream.

Lori,

Are you any closer in determining your new locale?  How many trips you think it will take to figure it out?

Looks amazing.  I am anxious about venturing out there. How was Pueblo? Any decent areas and home prices?

Quote from: ChrissyRyan on May 04, 2025, 02:14:12 PMConsider checking out some of these places Lori:

Grand Junction

And. . .

Note that some may not provide much of what many would call affordable housing!
Some are more remote.

Aspen

Boulder

Breckenridge

Crested Butte

Durango

Estes Park

Frisco

Ouray

Telluride.

Plus Colorado Springs, Denver, Glenwood Springs, Loveland, Silverton, Steamboat Springs, Woodland Park and perhaps Creede, Cripple Creek, Georgetown, Leadville and the Pueblo you plan to check out.  You know about Fort Collins.

Good luck.

Maybe you have been to all of them but not necessarily to find rentals or homes to buy.

To understand Colorado, you can look at the state map and see that the state is divided north-south by I-25. To east east are the flatlanders (prairie farmers/ranchers), and to the west are the Rocky Mountains. Northern Colorado is expensive (north of Colorado Springs and Denver) and is strong Republican conservative. South of Denver along the I-25 corridor the cost of living gets cheaper with the cheapest being near Trinidad, not far from New Mexico. Toward the west slope of the Rockies (Grand Junction, Montrose, etc.) is also Trump country. The San Luis Valley near Grand Junction is nicknamed Trump Valley because of all the Trump signs.

What keeps Colorado Democrat is that along the I-25 corridor are the highest population areas (Fort Collins, Denver, Colorado Springs). High population areas vote Democrat. But high population areas have higher crime, higher cost of living, higher homelessness, drug and gang problems, etc.

Southern Colorado is more liberal, but the towns are smaller. That means lower cost of living, but also limited services like medical specialty clinics, shopping, etc. So it makes sense to me to be in the southern area of the state, but close enough to the larger cities for access to services.

My main goal is mostly to re-establish residency to gain the protections that state laws offer. Pueblo is not ideal, but it offers enough necessities for me to live until I figure out what's next. The way the country is going, I don't know if I will even stay here. But for now, I will have a place and can save up enough money for a major move if needed.

Estes Park is one of my parents' favorite places. They often go there and drive through Rocky Mountain National Park. I spent a wedding anniversary at the Stanley Hotel. This is where Stephen King stayed when he wrote The Shining.

There are stories of the hotel being haunted. I had a friend who was an avid ghost hunter, and we spent many weekends in some pretty amazing places. While at the Stanley, she asked us to do some ghost hunting while we were there. I took hundreds of photos and recorded about 12 hours of audio. The only spooky thing was that at about 3:00 am, while we were sleeping, the audio recorder caught the sound of the dresser drawer opening and closing. The door was locked, and no way that anyone was in the room with us. They would have knocked over a suitcase that was blocking the door, and it was untouched.

Many of the other places mentioned are popular ski resorts. Telluride and Aspen are the most expensive places in the state. Many multi-million dollar homes and estates in those areas.

Such Gorgeous pics Lori... I lived in Westminster for a year doing a cleanup at a superfund site in Denver and got to see much of the state... I especially loved Glenwood Springs area, Estes Park area and around Four Corners/Durango...Mesa Verde is amazing! 🤗

Quote from: Annaliese on Yesterday at 03:15:45 PMLooks amazing.  I am anxious about venturing out there. How was Pueblo? Any decent areas and home prices?

Pueblo is not ideal. I'm not a fan of big cities, but Pueblo is around 110k. Like any city of its size, it has places that are dumps and some that are very nice. Some are crowded with homeless people, drug users, and criminals. Others are relatively safe.

Home prices are lower than in Colorado Springs, but not as nice. Many are older homes and may or may not have been well-kept. Trinidad is the cheapest area, but with a population of around 8k doesn't have as much to offer in the services area. The big trade there was in weed dispensaries. Before other states legalized marijuana, Trinidad cashed in on the weed tourism trade. People would come in from New Mexico to buy weed, and the money flowed. Since then, other states have legalized it, and the weed tourism trade has fallen off.

The Trinidad City Council (with a trans woman on the Council) is working on expanding the tourism trade for the future. I seriously gave it some thought, considering it was the Sex Change Capital of the World for 41 years. The current attitude is not so much acceptance as tolerance. People there just don't care what others do with their lives. That is a common theme of the entire state. People mind their own business as long as you mind yours. Of course, that doesn't apply in any of the Trump country areas.

I found a place in Pueblo that suits my needs. I have submitted an application, so we will see what happens. I won't give too many details, as this is the internet.  ;D

Thank you for the great info. I also am not a city person. I am looking for some place out of the way sorta.  Not too far away from a town but not too close either. I like the country. I like the mountain area. I will be looking for something rural.

You could stay in S.D. too.  Looks like it has nice places, at least to visit.

But Colorado may be better for you if you are set to live elsewhere.

A good, safe neighborhood is important.

Pueblo West is a nice residential area. It might be pricey to buy a place, though. They had no rentals available in my price range, so I didn't look that closely. Canon City is a nice small town, as is Florence. There are many small towns around. Just look at sites like Zillow to get an idea of what is available and the prices to buy or rent. Then search for their local newspaper to see what is happening in the area, like crime, ordinances, etc.

Maybe a motor home or RV on BLM land could work out for some.

I seriously considered it last year. There are places along the California/Arizona border where you can camp all winter for $189 total. There are rules. No facilities, ao your RV must be fully self-contained, i.e. fresh water tank for showers, drinking and washing, and a black water tank to hold sewage from toilet and shower.

Financing for the RV fell through, and that was for the best because I really do not enjoy driving very much. I just want to hurry up and BE THERE ALREADY. If I was younger, I would jump on the chance.  Don't like the weather? Turn the key and drive to warmer or cooler elevations. Don't like the neighborhood? Turn the key and go somewhere else.

Most Public Land has a 14-day limit. So you would be moving every two weeks. Adventure!

Sounds like cheap rent though.  What does a RV cost?  Those little ones you pull with a pickup truck without that big semi hookup in the truck bed, that is, using a trailer hitch you might even see on a van, is what I am thinking about.  Winnebago?

The big motorized RVs can cost as much as a house. The mid-range ones are reasonable, as are the smaller ones, like you mentioned. The mid-size ones with the big hitch in the truck bed can be financed for $350+ a month, but require a bigger engine to tow them with. The small ones with a standard tow hitch are very reasonable. I have seen them for $175-$250 per month, and some even have a fireplace!
