Story by Cyd Zeigler (11 May 2025)

Former Penn swimmer Lia Thomas competed by the rules. The transgender swimmer didn't make the rules, but she competed by them, winning an NCAA college swimming national championship and multiple other titles.

Now the Administration is demanding Thomas and the University of Pennsylvania — the school she swam for — return her medals and apologize to everyone.

The basis the Administration claims is that Penn violated federal law — Title IX in particular — by allowing an athlete born male to compete in the female sports category.

To remedy the situation, the Department of Education wants to erase Thomas' participation on the women's team from history.

Again, Thomas didn't make the rules. And neither did Penn. The Ivy League allowed Thomas to compete, and Penn is one of just eight schools in the conference. But it was NCAA rules that allowed Thomas to win a National Championship.

While those NCAA rules have now ... it was the NCAA, not Penn, that allowed her to compete.

Rules change all the time. Do people go demanding that results or records be erased because, under new rules, they wouldn't have set them?

The Department of Education claims the rules were illegal in the first place. Fine. Make that claim, and go after the NCAA and the people there who make the rule.
