When you travel and must pay for lodging, where do you typically stay overnight?

Perhaps you travel primarily wherever someone else is providing the lodging so you do not pay. 

Perhaps you split the lodging costs with a travel buddy.

Perhaps you do not travel that far or long that requires an overnight stay.


Would you prefer a rental home such as an Airbnb or a hotel room, and why?

I just booked my hotel for this month. Last trip, I stayed at a nicer hotel, but now the prices have gone up. This is due to terrorist tourist season, and this trip will include a weekend. Normally, I stay during the week because the rates are lower.

A pub that does meals including  breakfast was my usual stopover when I was  travelling  on my motorcycle.  
The worst place I stayed  was the Adelphi in Liverpool. It was also expensive. I usually rode home after visiting  a well known  motorcycle  clubs clubhouse  for open night but it was late November  so I stayed in the Adelphi as it was below freezing  after dark.

Note that the higher priced business hotels are often MUCH cheaper on Fridays and Saturdays because the business travelers went home.  The opposite timeframe and costs apply for the medium and lower cost hotels, when Fridays and Saturdays often cost more because of the increased weekend leisure travel. 


Blended rates apply typically if you stay at the same hotel and they have a room rate change during your stay (such as a weekend vs. weekday rate).  You get charged the lower rates when applicable and the higher rates when applicable.


I always try to get the best rates, regardless if my employer or I am paying the bill.  Why not?

They also offer veteran/military discounts. Also, seniors, AARP, and others. Veteran/military discounts provided better savings.

Automobile Associations also have travel discounts.  Like AAA.

Corporations also have discounts for their employers, there is a group code to use when making reservations.

Also conventions often provide a code for a price break.


Wholesalers of room nights also can give discounts, some hotel chains give room rate discounts and / or reward points.

Some people live on a cruise ship because it can be cheaper than renting an apartment!

I've travelled all around the world, spending most of my life abroad. When I was young I would really rough it. All manner of cheap accommodations, even sharing rooms with rats and many, many, times cockroaches.

These days I'm done with all that. As I have Complex PTSD I know myself and my needs.

So it's high end hotels for me these days. I need a good room in a good hotel that makes me feel safe and secure with a view out, room service, the works.

But I do draw the line at silly prices which have crept into e.g. the UK. I don't mind paying a fair bit if the quality is there but I really object to paying, say, $300 USD for a load of rubbish.

Thankfully you can still get some really fine quality stays outside the UK without having to pay the earth, especially outside of school holidays.
