Quote from: Lori Dee on June 19, 2025, 11:56:15 AMFriday is the Summer Solstice: the first day of Summer and the longest day of the year. We are preparing for this great event. The temp will be 95°F (35°C) today, 102°F (39 °C) tomorrow, and 100°F (38 °C) on Saturday. Then we get to cool down to 75°F (24 °C) on Sunday.

And as it was declared by the ancient Mayans thousands of years ago:

"In those days there shall be copious amounts of boob sweat."  ;D

Winter is coming to the Southern Hemisphere soon.

You can keep it over yonder ways. I am okay with snow on December 24th, but by the 26th, I am over it.  ;D

The older I get, the less I like the cold. But I still love the snow, even off-season storms (I have seen snowfall in every month of the year where I live, and I'm talking enough snow to cover the ground not just a 'flingering' which is how I think they say it in northern England). And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Lori, but rumor is, parts of Colorado occasionally experience winter.

Very true. I went to high school in Loveland along the Front Range, and I remember. As the oldest child, guess who got to shovel the driveway and sidewalks?

Fortunately, Pueblo is further south and a bit east, so it is more desert than mountains. They get snow there, but it doesn't last long. I am hoping Global Warming Climate Change will keep things bearable. If not, I can always move further west into higher elevations to experience all four seasons.  ;D

Congratulations Lori!!! I'm so glad the move went well and the house looks great! A touch of snow is so much easier as we get older than a foot of snow (or more...).

Best wishes in the new home!

Thanks, Emma!

The move is still in progress. The new place is ready to move in, but I still have some loose ends to tie up here before I leave. I expect to be leaving after the 4th of July. I have a VA appointment on the 10th that I'm trying to reschedule so I can attend it when I arrive in Colorado. However, the VA must involve 15 people, and everyone must move at the speed of government, making it a complex process.

My Primary doctor is out until mid-July due to a death in the family, so her nurses are getting the paperwork submitted to list me as a "Traveling Vet". That just basically cancels things here and notifies the new clinic that I will be transferring care to them.

The benefit to me is that, as a Traveling Vet, I am allowed a supplemental issue of all my meds to cover me while "on vacation". Since the VA does not allow us to stockpile meds, this will provide me with extras just in case the White House decides to do more stupid stuff that will affect my medical care.

In the meantime, I am getting everything ready to move quickly. My father is in the hospital, and I want to be ready in case my timeline accelerates.

There I was thinking only the NHS Executive could breed paperwork like trees were going out of fashion :) My perception of the VA is it is quite similar in terms of scope, is that right?

I think government is government.  ;D

While in the service, our training and technical manuals had a notice that they complied with the Paperwork Reduction Act. Then the manuals had blank pages to separate chapters, and the pages had a statement that "This Page Intentionally Left Blank."

I wonder how much money, paper, and ink could be saved by not including those pages.
And of course, the notice that it was left blank made the page not blank.   ???

No. But we kind of should be by now, Davina. It's becoming a more and more regular thing. Remember a few years ago when it hit 35 degrees? And most of the country just melted?

Mostly we have a temperate climate. Where the average doesn't go above like 23 degrees in the height of summer. Our houses, roads, and infrastructure isn't designed to deal with it. In terms of the world, the UK is along the same line of latitude as Kiev, and everything outside the US short of Alaska. Everyone other than Danielle is way south of us. So we shouldn't be getting these bonkers temperatures, and our housing isn't built for it. I watch a lot of American reaction channels who are like "What are you moaning about? It's constantly over 100 here!".

I guarantee you, come to the UK when this kind of nastiness is going on and you'd rather be back at home with your 100 degree temperatures. ;D It isn't just the heat, it's the humidity. When you have low relative humidity, you can just sweat off the excess. When you have the equivalent to the Amazon Rainforest just shy of the arctic circle... not so easy :D

When I lived in the California desert, the standing joke was, "... but it's a dry heat" as if that makes it better. 105 degrees is still 105 degrees!

While stationed in Louisiana, we experienced what you are talking about: 95 degrees with 95% humidity. It just makes the air thicker and stickier. That is miserable.

I prefer the "dry heat".  ;D

I think probably most people do, Lori. ;D And homes that aren't basically Thermos Flasks, designed to keep the heat in, lol.

Apparently there are heavy thunderstorm warnings here for the weekend. Which will most likely be a rumble or two but I am kind of sadistically hoping I might finally get to see my tornado. ;)

Sephirah with the right tornado you could wind up on the lad of OZ...just stay away from Donald World :o

We're getting our first heat wave here in NY.  Whenever I travel in England in the summer, I always carry a USB portable fan.  It has been a life-saver on many occasions.

Yeah Lori about the "dry" heat, its still too hot but high humidity and high heat is brutal.  Years ago I was running a competitive race in Central Park with 96% humidity and 98 degrees.  Two guys died and they were in their twenties. They sprayed water in the air as we ran.  I was stupid to run but the beers after tasted excellent.

Haha, well most of the time I feel like I'm melting so maybe I'm already there? ;D

Emma, that is just... I remember what city life used to be like. It was like being in a concrete oven. It's why I live in a tiny little village surrounded by woodland and open fields. The heat off buildings and roads and... god it's just brutal. I don't know how anyone deals with it. Even in my green and pleasant lands version of life... when it gets hot it gets hot. Because our houses are like pizza ovens. Not even kidding.

I have this giant wind tunnel thing with three huge fanblades. It's been on non-stop for like 10 days. I can't hear a thing but it's marginally colder. Until it just starts pushing warm air around then you might as well not bother.

I have a massive, massive respect for you folks who live in absurd temperatures most of the time. Get me off a plane there and I would literally be a little puddle.
