Yes new cars are a PIA, D where I have my workshop has lots of cars in with faults all to do with emission stuff from faulty EGR valves, DPF faults as well as sensor/ECU stuff. Some of it is so hard to get at to fix as well, that is why I had the EGR deleted on my car. The remap is good as it has 50 more HP and does much better on fuel! I am glad I am retired from spannering now.

I have officially surrendered engine work.  My bad back told me to stop. I have a great young mechanic around the corner who prices his work fairly.  It just means less eating out which has gotten ridiculously expensive any way.

I have limited what I will do, too. I just don't have the tools or space to work on them, so I leave it to professionals. I even had to cut back on my gold mining. It is very labor-intensive, but I enjoy it too much to swear it off completely. I just have to work smarter, not harder.  ;D

The Number One cause of back injuries is old people thinking they are still young people.  ;D

You are the same age as me, Danielle. ;D We are not Middle Aged! Although... girl you look like you're not even pushing 30. Must be that Alaskan vitality. :P <3 And your smile. Youthful enthusiasm is a thing. :)

That is not even fun. (ouchies)

The Army said they wanted to do back surgery on me. I asked what they were going to do. They said they would know when they got in there; it would be exploratory. I said there is no way I am letting some Army surgeon cut on my spine unless they can tell me exactly what they are going to do.

When they fused the vertebrae in my neck, I was 42. I retired "due to disability" a year later.

I tell people that my goal was to retire at age forty. I joined the Army at 18, so 20 years of service and retire at 38, plus or minus a couple of years. That plan went out the window, but I only missed by three years. Not the retirement I had planned for, but things are working out.  ;D

That is a big deal, Lori. And I thank you for your service. You have no idea how much respect I have for you, and Ash, And Dev, and every vet here and whoever served.

I joined the Navy at 16, because that was the earliest you can join in the UK... mostly to get away from a horrific childhood, and left when I was 27, due to a back injury. In my case it was my lower back due to an unfortunate incident with a crate on a submarine. A year of physio couldn't keep me in, sadly. They had no use for me. But that's beside the point. Anyone who serves is a certain kind of person. It takes a certain kind of mindset. And I am glad you are here to be basically the forum mom these days. <3 Thank you, and all vets, for being the kind of person you are.

Exactly this.

I told my recruiter that I wanted to go to Vietnam. He said, "We are bringing people back from there." I said, "OK, you need any help?"

Personally, I think everyone should enlist for three years fresh out of high school or college. The military teaches you social skills, teamwork, how to react to changing situations without overthinking, not to mention basic survival skills and first aid.

Granted, service isn't for everyone. When I graduated from training, all I wanted was out. But I began to see the benefits and what I could learn from it. I enjoyed serving my country, even when I disagreed with the meatheads in Washington. I had very good times and very bad times, but not a single regret.

From one of my favorite movies, "Fury"... "Best job I ever had."  ;D

And I would gladly serve again with all of the people you mentioned, you, Danielle, Ash, Devlyn, Robby, and more. We all had different jobs, different training, different services, even different countries, but like you said, it takes a special kind of person to serve. And we know, because we have been there.  :)

Fury is fantastic. I love that movie. Am not a huge Brad Pitt fan but I do like Jon Berenthal. ;D There's something about tanks. Kind of similar to subs. They become more than the sum of their parts. It's quite a weird thing to people who don't serve on them.

If you want a good naval movie to get your juices flowing, check out "Greyhound" with Tom Hanks. Amazing movie.

I kind of think I agree with you Lori, that people should get experience of it. It teaches you personal discipline, but more than that, it teaches you what bonds with other people are. However bad your own family might be, you get a new family forged through shared experience. It's quite eye opening and not something even the most misanthropic of people would ever think they can have. It teaches you to care about something other than yourself. Which is something I think a lot of people these days could benefit from.

I would have been more than honoured to serve with any of you folks. You keep a lot of that professionalism long after you leave. A lot of what you go through... it stays with you.

I will look for "Greyhound" tonight.

I'm not a Pitt fan either. I don't dislike him; he is good. I like Michael Pena.
What impressed me about "Fury" is that it shows very accurately what life inside a tank is like. In every crew, it seems like you have a newbie, a seasoned driver, a knowledgeable but hillbilly mechanic, a "Bible" gunner, and a tank commander that keeps them from killing each other. There is constant infighting, but in a brotherly competition kind of way. And when the enemy is outside the tank, they all band together and work like a well-oiled machine.

I have commanded many tank crews, and they all have the same sort of personality. The movie really showcases that like no other. Other branches of service and even different MOS in the Army were convinced that we "Treadheads be crazy."  ;D

Lol it's kind of similar on subs but with more people. ;D I think it's the enclosed environment, hahaha.

The Tiger in WW2 always kind of scared me. I know stuff is way more advanced these days, but back then, that was a scary beast.
