The new head of the Catholic Church – the first American to hold the role – made the comments during his first meeting with the Vatican diplomatic corps on Friday (16 May), which represents 200 countries, ahead of his formal installation Mass that took place on Sunday (18 May).

He said the family is "founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman", highlighting that his views align with the Catholic Church's core teachings on gay marriage.

He also said: "No one is exempted from striving to ensure respect for the dignity of every person, especially the most frail and vulnerable, from the unborn to the elderly, from the sick to the unemployed, citizens and immigrants alike."

In 2012, then-head of the Augustinian order, he was critical of entertainment media that held "sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel," including the "homosexual lifestyle" and "alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children".

Whilst Pope Francis said being gay as a "human fact", "not a crime" and labelled the criminalisation of LGBTQ+ people as "wrong", he said he only supported blessings for individual LGBTQ+ people – but not their unions.

"He also said: "No one is exempted from striving to ensure respect for the dignity of every person, especially the most frail and vulnerable, from the unborn to the elderly, from the sick to the unemployed, citizens and immigrants alike."

We seem to see this a lot from various organizations and government agencies. They say that everyone deserves respect and equal treatment... except you, and you, and you. Even the Veterans Administration claims, "Serving all who served." But that isn't true either.

Brilliant, new pope reversing any progress the Catholic Church may have made.

QuoteHe said the family is "founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman",

No, twinkle toes, your religion is founded upon the stable union between a man and a woman. Being a family has nothing to do with that.

I really didn't expect anything else. This was what I had expected. I am a baptized catholic, but have distanced myself from the religious practice for sometime now. I still belive in catholagy in some parts, but the leadership who make these decisions look through things from a spectrum that is in my opinion based more old word views and not on what is the whole spectrum of the world as it pertains to the human as a whole as it has evolved.
Always  look forward, there's no ⏳ to look  🔙. You are the person you were always meant to be.
Remember: if you focus too much on the destination,  you'll miss all the amazing stuff in-between.

I new he held these beliefs but I was hopeful that he might keep them non official.

UPDATE:
Pope Leo meets James Martin, US priest known for LGBT ministry

Pope Leo gave a high-profile private audience to a prominent U.S. priest who ministers to LGBT Catholics on Monday, in a possible sign the new pontiff will continue the late Pope Francis' legacy of opening up the Church to the gay community.

Leo, the first U.S. pope, met at the Vatican with Rev. James Martin, who has been attacked repeatedly by conservative Catholics for his ministry but was supported by Francis.

"It was very consoling and very encouraging," Martin told Reuters after the meeting. "I heard the same message from Pope Leo that I heard from Pope Francis about welcoming LGBTQ people."

Francis, who led the Church for 12 years before his death in April, issued a decree in 2023 allowing priests to administer blessings to same-sex couples on a case-by-case basis, although the Church still only officially recognises marriages between men and women.

The Catholic Church teaches that LGBT people should be respected and that their human dignity must be defended. It also teaches that same-sex attraction is not sinful, but that sexual relations outside marriages between men and women are.

I think we are beginning to see some clarity in where the Pope stands. As more interviews are done and more details are discussed, the Pope's position becomes clearer.
