Migden hits stump in tough re-election bid

"When Migden left the Assembly in 2002 to run successfully for the state Board of Equalization, she backed former San Francisco Supervisor Harry Britt over Leno in the race to succeed her. Leno beat Britt. Leno's decision to challenge Migden is another face-off between leaders of San Francisco's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and has split not only progressives but Democrats across the state."

Unfortunately, I don't live in her district which is largely comprised of Marin County.  But if I could, I would vote for her.  Carol has been a friend to the transgender community, recently pushing through $300,000 in funding for the Transgender Economic Empowerment Initiative, a community  program to end joblessness.  I spoke with her briefly at the award ceremony and found her to genuinely concerned and engaging.  So she's not a great driver.  Financial irregularity in politicians is one of the "San Francisco Values" we don't like to talk about.  There's corruption at City Hall?  I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!

I think Leno has done a lot more for the community, the trans community in particular.

Would you care to elaborate on that statement?

Sure.  It was Leno, not Migden (who has done little more in her State career other than a couple of DUI busts and getting a record fine for campaign finance violations) who made sure that the review and revisions of the SF TG ordinance was done and adopted.  It was Leno who made a TG woman the first TG person to be honored as 'woman of the year' by the State of California.  It was Leno who wrote and spearheaded both the gay marriage and TG rights bills.  Thought they didn't pass, I'm not going to give Carol a pass in doing nothing about it.

At base, CM is political hack, who only has worked in the public sector, largely in roles that were appointed not elected.  Its Leno, who has run a real life business.  Who has been elected to every office he has held.  And who has never forgot who brought him to the dance, and never distanced himself from them either.

Running a business is nothing like running a government agency.  One uses accrual accounting and the other budgetary. they are completely different animals.  And he sold outdoor advertising (gotta love those billboards) !  A business he inherited from his father.  At least he didn't sell life insurance, though that is probably an option when he loses this election.

TG rights in California are largely the product of a court decision extendting gay rights to the TG community from the gay rights legislation championed by Sheila Kuehn (D-Santa Monica) and supported by Carol Migden.

When it comes down to it, it's a choice between the warm and affable Migden and a pompous ass named Leno!  >

So, (aside from also being a large part of SF and the southern part of Sonoma) what business of it is yours?  Isn't it up to us who live in that district to vote in people who we think will be our (not your) best rep in the State Senate?  Of course, if your choices are not as good - well, whose fault is that? 

I think that people are tired of the kind of people like Carol, who voted for tougher DUI regs, but then tried to get out of them when she was busted.  Who voted for tougher campaign finance rules, only to violate them.  Whose power comes from being appointed to power, rather than - as Leno did - working his way up to it.  I've had it with the Burton-Pelosi machine, and all their minions, CM being one of them.

Well it's not the business of the LA Times, certainly, yet they write about it.  I think I'll use those same 1st Amendment rights!

As a real SF coffee house person I almost never see a copy of the LA Times laying about, its - in that cosmo world - the New York Times I see.  That LA rag is strictly for Conta Costa (where they like that right wing schlock)  or down the peninsula, or even in the south part of SF that is not in this election.  Elect your own people - not mine.  Carry your First Amendment rights to the ballot box with you, but they never were intended to let people meddle in elections that are not any part of them.  And, anyone who had read my posts, knows I feel very strongly about that. 

I worked with both of them, and I know that when no one else stood up for TG rights, and not just TS, but all TG persons, Mark Leno did.  Carol was AWOL, not doubt trying to work out the triangulation of the entire issue.  But Mark stood up for us.  I'm down with that.

And, like all her supporters, I see you have no good excuse for the DUI deals, nor the cheating on the campaign finance deal.

So does the fact that you don't like the LA Times, a far more respectable rag than the Chron, invalidate my analogy?  I think not.  You know the LA - San Francisco rivalry?  It's very one sided.  Angelinos (of which I was one) harbour no ill will toward The City.  We are all Californians after all.

Discussing candidates in a public forum is the essence of democracy.  Where did you get the notion that my First Amendment rights end at Fillmore Stret?  It's certainly not in the text of the amendment or subsequent case law.

Leno may be the king of hollow gestures and proclamations but Carol comes through with the dough!  TEEI funding affects the entire City not just North Beach.  How do you suppose the working girls down on Polk Street value that?

As for the DUI?  Now who sounds like a wing nut?  Who amongst us but for the grace of the Goddess....

Mark Leno, for one.  It would be nice to have this office drama free for a couple of years.
