The legal standard used by a state Division of Human Rights judge to interpret Amelia Kearney's racial discrimination claim against the Ithaca City School District is too restrictive and places the legal bar too high for students and parents who feel they've been discriminated against, Lambda Legal said in a brief filed with the division last week.

Lambda Legal, a legal advocacy organization focused on issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals, submitted its brief with the division on May 9 urging the division to adopt a less restrictive standard for discrimination cases involving students in schools.
