I just really heard this lyric for the first time today, of my fave song right now (Underneath It All by No Doubt), cause this girl I live with and I, it's sorta becoming our song:

Now it's complex, this part of the song; Gwen has someone else singing, the reggae groove comes to the fore, and takes over the melody.
I do not know who the singer is,
It may be male or female;
The lyric is clearly Gwen singing to a man...

I know the song, but not that well. When I looked up the lyrics I couldn't find the exact phrasing you mention.

If the sites are correct the person singing the part I think you are referring to is "Lady Saw."

Okay, I see more of where you are coming from now.

It is cool when you have those unspoken moments of truth. Music has that magic ability to transcend space and time and take us to a place we didn't even know existed.

No doubt, there is some good pop music in there. Though most (a lot) of new music is pop to some extent, and I do not think pop as genre can be either classified or written off.

For me music is so much about emotion and message, I can find genius in the most obscure and the most pop stuff. If it's good, it's good, irrespective of genre.

You know this reminds me of a concept album that I thought would be fun.

A guy band doing covers of songs written by women about and to men.

Female artists often do covers of love songs written by men and do not change the pronouns being used. K D Lang doing Elvis Costello comes to mind. And this goes by without much notice.

So two questions:

What are some examples you can think of transgendered lyrics/themes in music?
What are some examples you can think of bands covering songs written by the opposite sex?

Off the top of my head I can only think of David Bowie in various songs, Lola by the kinks, B-52's in various, and K D Lang as I already mentioned.

In the 60d and 70s I liked Buffy St. Marie.   She sang "Going Down Cripple Creek"  without changing the gender.  I remember Joan Biaz sing songs written for the male point of view without changing the gender.   Ex North Dakota Hippie
