"Modernity did not develop gradually and unnoticed in Iceland," writes
author Thráinn Bertelsson, "it arrived almost overnight with a crash
and a bang.  We now have in Reykjavík all of a sudden got everything which suits a cosmopolitan city, not only a university and a cinema, but also football and homosexuality."
