I oppose it for the simple reason of the extra pain and insult it adds to the lives of decent, loving, productive men and women who have often suffered immensely for being nothing more complicated than themselves.

As I have witnessed in my cousin's life, gay, lesbian and transgender men and women already have enough private cares to untangle and try to resolve — as do most of us at some time or another.

Amendment 2 is the unnatural act that threatens a civilized society, and it's one that I hope the people of our state won't be ruthless enough to invoke.

The poem mentioned at the top of the op-ed is at the bottom of the piece. Amendment 2 is a "marriage protection" thing.
