The Marlboro Man, addled with love poems,

Begins to act strangely...

He treats his horse like a house pet

And sits at home in the afternoons,

Watching Oprah and Rachael Ray.

Sick of sagebrush,

He trades in his old black skillet

For a dream kitchen.

"For god's sake pull yourself together" nags his cigarette-steeped sister

As her kids finger his figurines.

He quits smoking,

Gives up huckstering.

The Lesbians next door buy him a rainbow

--a real one!--

Which he places in the yard between the trellis

And the barbecue.

In the evenings,

There is the sound of Gato Barbieri drifting from his windows;

No buttes

No diamondback rattlers.

Just

The Marlboro Man

Reading the Advocate

In the peace of the almost midnight.

I have to admit that I don't really understand it. The Marlboro Man must be an American creation. *blushes* But I love the rhythm. It reminds me of those surreal dreams from Twin Peaks.

Very nice. :)

Above all... remember: you are beautiful, you are valuable, and you have a shining spark of magnificence within you. Don't let anyone take that from you. Embrace who you are. <3

Thank you, Leiandra.  :)

FYI, the Marlboro Man was the cowboy symbol for Marlboro cigarettes.  ;) He still is, in print ads, I think.

Oh.

I understand some of the imagery a lot more now. Thank you. :)

So, it's true Stealthgrrl. The real appeal of "The Marlboro Man" does lie in. . .

the packaging

;D ;D ;D

Well, Kiera, it does appear that your cowboy there prefers the convenient hard pack over the soft. So much for subtlety in advertising, sheesh. I can almost hear hundreds of FTMs lighting up, hoping for this effect. And a similar number of MTFs quitting this nasty habit in abject horror.  :D

Before this thread goes entirely south, I would like to say that this poem is one of my favorites from among my own. I like my Marlboro Man, I think he's sweet and admirable.

The two best known Marlboro men, Wayne McLaren, and David McLean both died of lung cancer in one of those ironic twist of fate that you just can't make up.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
