Hi all,

I have just been prescribed Vaniqa cream to reduce my facial hair growth. Has anyone else been prescribed this and did it work for anyone. It is usually prescribed for facial hair growth in women. The doc said as I was on HRT and anti androgens it might work while I wait for laser treatment.

i haven't heard of it or used it...lol!! but if it works please let the rest of us know immediately!!!! if they put it on the shelves, i'll bet it wouldn't ever stay in stock.

Neither had I but I will give it a go. The trial is for three months and I start next week so I will let you all know. Apparently it takes that long to see any difference. It doesn't get rid of the hair just slows things down and makes them more fine and lighter. A stop gap to laser.

I have been using it for about two months now,  it seems to have slowed the growth.  I am hoping for better results now that I am having laser done.  Just had my second treatment and no problems.  Usually takes a few days for me to see any results.  It seems that when I shave I am removing the hairs that are zapped.

Tried it years ago when it first came out. The insurance would not cover it and the two tubes of the stuff cost me over $130 USD. All for nothing. It had very little to no impact to the hair growth across a few months of application.

My endo prescribed it to me ,but I could not see any change in facial hair growth. It is supposed to slow the growth but did not for me. But on the other hand electolysis has made all the difference in the world.

I havn't tried Vanique, but I have tried the folowing:

Surgi-Hair Stop - by Ardell
Surgi-Facial Hair Stop™ by Ardell
Hair No More™ Advanced Hair Growth Inhibitor Spray Mist
Kalo Hair Inhibitor - Lotion, by Nisim International

Even over an extended period, none of them had any real effect. One day I would think they were working, the next I
would be back to normal. I found that Surgi-Hair stop worked the best, but it smells disgusting and is a thick gel which
ruins make-up and causes spots. 

I'm using a non-prescription hormone based cream now, and results have been amazing. This is a little surprising, as many
of the posts here say it should not work. (My Avtar is actually before I started to use it, using dermablend and close shaving).

Inital effects kicked in after only a few days use, and after 6 months I have very little bears shadow, and shave once a day. 

Although the supplier claims it has no side effects, I have posted elsewhere to see if anyone knows of any trans-dermal issues,
as I'm not signed up for any form of HRT monitoring at the moment. Cost is around $150 USD for about 9 months at the rate I'm
using it.

I've used Vaniqua for quite some time. It dos not completely stop growth but I found it slowed it significantly.

I understand that it works for about 50% of us. Quite a few people find that it iritates their skin and cannot use it.

Thanks for all you replies so here's an update on my findings so far after several weeks of trial.

I was recommended just to use it on upper, lower lip and chin.

1. Compared to other areas of my beard there has been a significant decrease in hair growth and much finer.
2. This bit is odd - My upper lip is virtually free of hair growth for the past four weeks with only about 10 to 20 hairs growing and mostly blond (original hair colour black). I have also pulled out small black dots of hair that seem to be similar to when I have had laser.
3. I am on estrogen and anti-androgens so this may have contributed to my findings but I don't think this can  account to all of the above as other areas of untreated beard seem to be as normal albeit slower in growth but still as thick.
4. Beard did depress me but at this stage I am hopefull and more confident when out and about.

Was prescribed Vaniqa by my endo and used it for a few months, it helped a little but not much.  At $80 a bottle, not covered by insurance (lasts a little over a month), it became too expensive for me and I stopped using it.

With creams like Vaniqa, the theory sounds good but to see results, u need to be dedicated and use it for a long time. I would only use it on the face. It should be used in conjuction with laser or electrolysis.

Bumping this old thread. I just got a prescription for vaniqa Monday and have been using it twice a day so that makes about 3 days so far. I see some say you have to use it several weeks before it starts to work but I am seeing it work just after a day. I am painfully aware of my stubborn gray hairs that are very course and at the end of the first day my face didn't feel as rough. I look forward to seeing the results after a month. 

I am currently having electrolysis done on my neck area (what a PITA that is and my electrologist can't wait to finish it) so I am going to use this on my face until the neck is done. Then I will find an area I want to focus for electrolysis and use the cream in other places.  Even slowing the hair down a bit lets me get a closer shave (god I hate saying that!).

Hi Dana, wow, its an old thread, lol. Anyway, I was told to use it also on the areas that were going to be treated by laser and electrolysis because it slows down the growth but also weakens the hairs and makes them better to remove buy the above methods.

I can vouch for this. Most of what's left now are finer, white hairs instead of black and dense.

That is GREAT news!

They say that Vaniqa doesn't work for 50% of users.  I'm in that 50% - I used it for 3 months with almost no reduction in facial hair.

I can recommend a reputable pharmacy (Vaniqa) - pharm4all.com Good price and quality.

Minimal temporary results at best and not worth the expense, save your money. It might work for fine downey hair but as everybody knows typical beard hair is not fine or downey.
