Is there any hope of hormones, therapists, dr visits and test for someone like me, no insurance, living modestly, college student.....
it really sucks!!

I really want to do this the right way (i was self medicating for a bit)
and it seems as though I can b/c of income and no insurance...

Is anyone out there in the same boat, what did you do to overcome this obstacle?!

Thanks hunbunz!

Quoteno insurance

Most insurance does not cover gender change. Some doctors code it to fit the rules of your insurance with a wink and a nod.

Transition is very expensive so focus on a good income.

Hormones, estrogen, is rather inexpensive through compounding pharmacies. The doctor to write the script isn't.

I have no idea where you are, I'm presuming in USA. If you are anywhere close you can get the scripts and the semi-annual check-ups through this organization: http://www.mazzonicenter.org/ The Tom Waddell Clinic in SF works much the same way. Both operate under the rule of "informed consent" and don't require that you be in treatment with a therapist. Both are free if your income qualifies, sliding-scale otherwise.

There might be others but I am not aware of them. I was an intern at Mazzoni a couple of years ago and the people there are just really knowledgable and understanding. I would imagine Waddell is about the same.

It is all in the coding. As long as GID or the like never appears, you should be fine. I have never had an insurance claim kicked out of the system but once my therapist wrote GID as the diag code I stopped seeing her except for group sessions. Of course I did not try to claim SRS, where I work it would create a huge, huge problem and then some.

It depends on where you are located.  If you're anywhere near a big city, you could probably find a women's health clinic or feminist health center that would at least be sympathetic and may be used to treating FtMs.  Do some research.  If there's a Planned parenthood or anything similar, you could talk to them, and they may be able to refer you to someone.

Well, of course you are, babe!  I just meant that women's centers/clinics that are used to treating FtMs are also likely to treat MtFs, though they may not see them as often.
