Am I the only one who hates short hair?  I've always had long hair, except as a kid, when I wished I did.   For the past 15 years my hair has been long.  Of course, in girl mode, I dyed it.

I cut it off at the beginning of my transition, and at first I liked it.  I went shorter and shorter.  My last 3 cuts used the clippers on the backs and sides, with more on top to spike if I want.  I do like it.  But at the same time, since I'm not yet passing, and I'm not sure I like how it makes me look.

OTOH, I recently went to a festival and had ample time to people watch.  Yes, most men had short hair, but what got my attention were the guys who had long hair yet were well groomed.  That's what I want!

My friend, who I'm out to, says I'll look like an aging hipster and look ridiculous.  But then, I've never cared what people thought, and heck, I'm transitioning, which many people will find creepy.  Why can't I just have hair that I want?  It will take a year to grow it where I want it (it's pretty buzzed at the moment), and by then T will be in effect and I won't look girly, but like a guy with long hair.

My stylist says NO!!  Her husband is FTM and looks great with a buzz.  But then he has a nice beard also.

Maybe when I pass 100% my hair won't bug me so much.  But right now (and it's been 4 months since I cut it!!) I'm not liking it anymore.

Thoughts?

There are plenty of men who look good and polished with long hair. All that matters is that YOU like your hair style. You're not transitioning to somebody else's idea of how men should style themselves.
So go for it!

My hair is short.

The fact that the person who cuts your hair is the partner of an FTM is cool, but have you been going to her forever?  If so, give your local barber shop a try.  You know the one- it's got the striped pole out front.  Tell them you're in a play and acting in a male role- you need to look as male as possible.

And for the long hair, go for it!  Might be easier to wait until you're passable, though, otherwise you'll be getting ma'amed (and frustrated) more often.

The person cutting my hair has been giving me a corporate casual cut which is pretty male.  Just I'm not passing, so I don't look male with it.  :(

I get ma'am enough even with buzzed hair; I think by the time 6 months goes by I'll look more male, after T has had time to take effect.

I've always liked long hair on men. Currently, though, being pre-T and all it is a little feminizing. I'm thinking I'll cut it short until I have visible facial hair (if I'm so fortunate) then I'll grow it out again when ppl have trouble questioning my gender. I think long hair can look perfectly acceptable on a man without looking like an 'aging hipster' or anything else creepy. My dad had long hair fro quite a long time

I think that after 30-35 long hair on guys begins to look childish, unless you got some maximum volume deal going on.  The more gray, the worse it looks.

And weight figures in too.  The thinner you are the better it looks, a bit more round and you start to look like the comic book guy on the Simpsons.

I'm getting my haircut/styled this week.  I'm showing my guy these pictures.  Is this the length you are speaking about or...?

What do you think?

Looks good, Brady.  But I'm talking ponytail long on me. ;D

I'm a child of the 60s & 70s.  What can I say?????

Dude that would be way awesome! You need a Harley and some leather pants too :)

Dude, even the remaining members of the Grateful Dead have short hair. Not a single ponytail to be found in the crew either.  Metallica, once the kings of the big hair, now have buzz cuts.  It's a new century.

LOL I used to have those!!  (the leather pants, not the Harley).  Almost took a motorcycle riding class.  But then I bought an RV.   ::)

Dude!!!! People told me for the longest time not to cut my hair and stuff and I listened to them though what I really wanted was short hair. Managing my hair was depressing especially since I hated it, and my hatred for my hair began to reflect outwardly as well as inwardly because it really began to look like ->-bleeped-<-. I cut it all off a couple of weeks ago and I've never been happier with it.

Don't let people talk you into not doing what you really want! Just do what you want if it makes you happy :) There are plenty of ponytal brahs out there, you will be one of them!

And I second the harley and leather pants :D Trade in your RV!!

Remember the most important motorcycle accessory, its an up to date organ donor card.  No sense in letting it all go to waste.

Got that already!! ;D

Nah, I'll leave the crotch rockets to my ex, who traded in a perfectly nice classic Yamaha V-star for some gawd-awful rice burner.  Blech.

Dude or no dude, I'm just not sure I'm the buzz-hair type of guy.

BTW, my son has long hair.  He's 10.  And could care less when people mistake him for a girl, other than the bored eyeroll that says they're stupid (he's a skater dude).

I gave up my bikes (Honda 750 Super Sport and BMW K series) when I got to be 48 and realized I had lost a real short split second in timing.  Not much, but more than enough to know it was not going to get better.  And at that I lived in Iowa, which wasn't bad, riding a MC in San Fran and California, while nice, is far more deadly.

I was always interested in a motorcycle until like a month ago.

One of my fellow camp counselors, Andrew, got a BRAND NEW motorcycle this summer and loved it like a child.  On our day off, we were going to meet at a fancy mall then go see Dark Knight with another one of the counselors, Megan.  As Megan and I were pulling into the mall parking lot, we saw a million fire trucks and other emergency vehicles.  Someone didn't see him and completely hit him, totaling his motorcycle.  Scared the crap out of me seeing my friend laying on the pavement, grimacing in pain with paramedics all around him  :-\ Luckily, he was okay, just REALLY beat up.

That being said I don't think I'll be getting a motorcycle soon.

In a perfect world, where there were only motorcycles they would be even safer than cars, (over 32K a year dead in cars per year) but as long as there are cars, its almost a death sentence.  Motorcycles have about 5-6K dead every year.

Stupid motorcyclists aside (you know, the ones that pass you a 90+ mph, weaving in and out of traffic on the freeway around cars doing 70-80) who obviously have a death wish, many cyclists are hit or killed by drivers who don't see them.  Harleys are loud enough to hear, but still.

Yeah, I figure one parent on a motorcycle is enough for my kids.  Why endanger myself, too?  At least nobody can claim not to see my humongous RV!

Just don't do what my friend did if you smoke.  He caught his beard and hair on fire when he let his hair loose at ren fair.  Fortunantly he only singed it and wasn't really hurt lol
Every day we pass people, do we see them or the mask they wear?
If you live under a mask long enough, does it eventually break or wear down?  Does it become part you?  Maybe alone, they are truly themselves?  Or maybe they have forgotten or buried themselves so long, they forget they are not a mask?
  •

sneakersjay

Nah, I don't smoke!  ;)

But seriously, I live in a cold state, and I'm dreading having icy ears this winter.  So there's a practical reason not to buzz any more...
