I'm all moved in...my boyfriend and my mom helped me, and I love my dorm room. I found out that guys do live in my building, just not in my half. So I'm not as obviously out-of-place. My favorite part? They'd put our names on our doors, and mine says Michael, which I did NOT expect. Luckily my mom decided to ignore it, like everything else involved with me being trans. Lawl. So yeah...hooray!

Enjoy, study a lot, don't drink too much.

That's awesome! It'll save you a lot of trouble by having your name on the door already. Very cool.

Hah! So it is possible to get into college as a transguy. That's quite relieving to hear. As well as having your male name on your door, woulda been awkward if they used your original name I'm guessing. ;) Where do you school?

What gets you into college is money, your high school grades, and your SAT/ACT scores.  Your trans status does not matter.

Nice.  I was too scared that they would stick me in with girls, so I commute.

Dorm policies are different from the general student rules.  Which is why I lived off-campus (by a whole block and a half).

Lol I feel like Asher meant that it's possible to be viewed as male by the university in the sense that GR's door has his male name on it rather than his female name, and he's being viewed as a man rather than a woman.....

At any rate, congrats Michael! I'm glad everything went well since last I heard you were going to speak to someone about your dorm. Enjoy college, study hard, and make many friends.

Though for many people the entire trans deal is a new development to them, I assure you that American Colleges and Universities (English ones too) have been dealing with this for a decade or more.  Given that you have a lot better chance being treated the way you want at the University of California at Berkeley than at Bible College in the South.  Of course the first choice requires you be in the top 1% of you class with the top 2% of SAT/ACT scores, and the second requires you pay and be breathing, with the second being just an option.

I go to school at a large public college in Tennessee. Most students live off-campus, and I'm the first trans student who came out to Housing and actually decided to live on-campus. And I'm being treated mostly as a guy...except I live around girls and had to check in using my birth name. But I was sooo stoked to have the right name on my door. Not something I would expect from anywhere in TN. Though college in general has been filled with pleasant surprises so far.

Yay! I'm really happy for you XD

lol, my flatmate spells his name 'Mikel' and gets irritated by the other spelling cause it looks like it's meant to be pronounced 'ME-CHAY-ALL'... But I just call him Kanako-chan.

People like to spell my name Micheal. It's kindof annoying. One friend who consistently misspells it has taken to spelling it Mikhail (because I told him about that version). I like that way too. I know of this one guy who's Mike-kun. Mee-kay, not just Mike. That has to be the cutest version I've heard, but I don't want to be a copycat. In Japanese class, I'll be Michael-kun or [Lastname]-san.

Well originally I meant what Tekla addressed, getting accepted, but I also agree with your point.

Tekla: I know, that's what all their discrimination policies say, but I'm paranoid that what it says and what actually happens are two different stories... :-\

Some schools are liberal, others are conservative.  Some are very, very liberal, others are like Middle Ages.  Do your homework before you go.  But the general rule of thumb is, the more liberal the state (New York, Cali) and the more urban the campus - the more liberal it really will be.  But nothing beats private school, turns out when you are spending the big bucks, they do a lot to keep you there.

Yeah dude, I'm leaving on Monday for sure.  Congrats on the Michael!

Luckily, I'm living off campus, because all the dorms are same sexed I believe. Plus, if I lived on campus my boyfriend couldn't live with me.  Well, I guess if I snuck him in  is that what's gonna go down with you and yours?

He's coming over tomorrow morning before he goes to work. Hopefully that'll happen a lot. Also, I'll probably be spending a couple nights a week at his place, unbeknownst to my parents. Like...weekends. Man, a large part of any spending money my parents give me is going to end up in a "Omg this is for Sam because gas is expensive" fund. He's only about 20 minutes away, though.

QuoteHah! So it is possible to get into college as a transguy.

Absolutely. I didn't tell my college that I was trans when I applied, but after I got in, I told them and had all my info changed. They were completely understanding. (Of course, it helps that it's Williams.) The director of the health center even mentioned that one of her best friends is an FTM. So they changed all my name stuff, made accommodations, etc. I'm treated just like a normal guy, I can use the guys' bathrooms, all that. All of our dorms are co-ed, so it wasn't a problem -- freshman year, though, they did put me in an all-guys hallway. This year, I even get a single with an adjoining bathroom -- one of the choice rooms on campus -- which was really kind of them. Hooray for liberal arts colleges!
Lock up yer daughters.
