I'm not a drinker.  No real reason why, just never liked the taste.

I understand.  I can't stand strong drinks.

i chose "i don't like alcohol" which isn't entirely true. i kind of liked it too much. i tried to do the everything in moderation technique which didn't quite work for me.

yes, knowing when to stop is important unfortunately some people just can't.

i never really discuss sobriety b/c it's not something one goes around announcing (other than in meetings).

that when i decide to begin to get drunk... i am voluntarily deciding to use hard drugs

that's how it is/was for me. inhibitions are significantly lowered and suddenly it doesn't seem like such a bad idea to do that and drive home.

but i still feel compelled to answer the question. when i did drink it was jager bombs (jagermeister and red bull) or good ol' Jack Daniels.
go big or go home eh?

I used to like Jager when I was dope sick.
Alcohol lies in the category as hard drugs for me as well. Not because I had any problem with it, or the 'alcoholic gene' or whatever. Didn't do much for me usually, didn't ever need a drink as an alchy might, but I know what it is.
This is not any different than a thread on "what recreational drugs do you like?".
It really isn't.
"What dope do you guys like ta do? Do ya like crack or regular powdered coke?" etc.
get my meaning?

good point, just b/c one is legal doesn't make it any better or worse than the other.

I don't drink beer at all; I had a horrible experience as a child (long story) and haven't been able to stomach it since.

I rarely drink at all (probably a total of 8 drinks this year), but when I do I prefer Tanqueray & 7, with a splash of Roses' lime juice. And of course, being from South Texas, a shot of the cheapest Tequila I can find on my birthday!

Gee, I never thought of it that way! And since I'm antisocial, that explains why I drink so little...

Maybe you should change your name to Ann T. Social then. ;)

I answered that I like mixed drinks, but I rarely drink.  Used to not be the case.  Was quite the party girl in a younger life.  My favorite was Long Island Iced Teas, but those would knock me on my butt today.  An occassional margarita with a Mexican meal is good.

Side note...I can honestly say that even though I was a party girl, I did not ever drive drunk!

Despite my dad's best efforts at making me an alcoholic ("allowed" me to sip his beer and whiskey at around 5 years old+, "awl, isn't that cute?"), I don't particularly care for the stuff. Similar to Kimberly, I don't mind the taste of some of it - beer is OK, and some wines - but I don't like the FEELING from it. I'm too messed up already to be playing with my brain functions, lol. The idea of being "out of control" or lowering my inhibitions is terrifying to me. Heck, it might even be TS-related, as I've always monitored myself for fear My Big Secret might be showing... that some slip up, some mannerism, some gesture might it give it away. The LAST thing I'd want to do is lower my inhibitions and "be myself."

So I'll drink the toasts at weddings, and have maybe have a glass of wine after dinner once every 6 six months... but that's it.

I never like the tastes of any of the stuff so I don't.  :icon_blah:

One time about 7 or 8 years ago, I got smashed on a fifth or whiskey.  Never did that again.  In fact, I can't even drink too much or I start feeling nautious.  Strong drinks by themselves will do that to me too.  I have a bottle of Maker's Mark that I haven't been able to drink much of because it's so strong.  Fortunately, mixing with coke really helps dillute a bunch of different alcohol.

An occasional beer (after all, I'm of German descent, it's almost mandatory!), red wine or shot of bourbon in my cola is what I like.  I love cooking with alcoholic liquids, especially in glazes and marinades.

I feel that I have to watch myself, though, I tend to like it too much and will think, the day after, "That felt good yesterday, maybe I'll have another one .  .   ."  I think that's the road down that slippery slope so I usually say no to that thought.

Let's talk about hangovers:

Fortunately I haven't had a hangover in a very long time.  I've drank too much alcohol before, but I know that if I drink lots of water after that and eat some deep fried foods, that can really help.  Deep fried food slows down the absorbtion of alcohol and water helps with dehydration.  I've also heard tomato juice helps a lot.  I learned a lot of this in bartending school.

Melissa, I've heard the very same thing.  Alcohol dehydrates you, so the water helps, also the thing about deep fried foods too.  The tomato juice thing is why so many people who drank the night before drink bloody marys the next morning.  I love tomato juice, but just plain.  I think bloody marys are disgusting!

I haven't had too many hangovers in my time, but the one doosey that I did have, it was from getting smashed on screwdrivers.  That was 20 years ago and I still kind of cringe at the smell of orange juice.  The other bad hangover I had was when I drank 18 of those Mike's hard lemonades.  Yuck!!  I've also heard that hangovers are also dependent upon how sweet the mixer is.

18 Hard lemonades?  Ouch!  Just try to avoid wine hangovers.  I hear they are the worst.

Darn right Melissa. I had a two day hangover after a friend's wedding, where the red wine flowed endlessly. The first day was characterized by crawling from bed to the bathroom with a garbage can in my hand in case I wasn't crawling fast enough. By the afternoon, my garbage can and I were crawling to the kitchen to try and stuff down some plain bread to absorb the acid in my stomach.

I couldn't stand up without feeling like my head was going to explode until day two.

That was about 20 years ago and while I will have the occasional glass of red wine, I will never overdo it again.

Now this is a nice reversal... Now the only porblem Im having with the band about transitioning is being the designated driver... its soooooo boring to sit there and watch them get drunk and talk about the same things.... sadly I used to be right there with them.... its so STUPID!    *shakes her head* Atleast there not mean drunks and they are gaurentied to get home safe.
