Palin's Self-Reliant Image of Alaska Is Bogus
By David Morris, AlterNet. Posted September 15, 2008.

Palin is trying to appeal to the self-reliant, anti-government voters while her state is the most dependent on government pork.

In her latest comment on the "Bridge to Nowhere" controversy, Sarah Palin appealed to the self-reliant, individualist, rugged, anti-government image most Americans have of Alaska. "If we wanted a bridge," she declared, "we would build it ourselves."

Actually, much of Alaska long ago lost the tradition of self-help. Palin might be campaigning on an anti-government, do-it-yourself platform, but her state is the most dependent on the federal government of all 50 states. Washington sends Alaska more money per capita than any other state. Alaskans receive back from the federal government almost $2 for every $1 they send to Washington. It's a sweet deal.

That, and basically being one huge construction site, and due to the nature of construction work, its about the most corrupt state this side of the old Jersey.

My view: Everything Palin does is bogus.

My Gods. I can't believe she's McCain's VP.

Umm, that covers, ummm, almost every state in the union!! :) Even parts of NY are "this side of Joisey" for you!! OK, what about New England, are they more corrupt than Joisey? :)

Personally, I very much doubt it. New Jersey has this knack for corruption that practically the entire rest of the world would just love to reach. But according to the article, perhaps Alaska has managed to surpass it!!

YO, gotta imagine the garden state with oil money.  Not bits of it, but huge amounts.  Enough to buy off the entire state really.  That 'oil tax' they cash that check every year for is nothing less than a buyout.  Vinnie and Guido would approve.

I'm sure Vinnie and Guido would, although paying out $3500 to less than 700k people is a rather easier matter than paying that much to almost 6 million folks!! :)

I'm sure Vito and Guido and Simon and Paul and Frank would all only have that much gold in their dreams. Ah, nothing like small-state population with nation-sized economy and resources to corrupt!! :)
