Does anyone know what happens when a trans person goes to jail? Like where do they put us? Do they go by your drivers license or what? I am pre everything right now but very close to starting my transition. I am on parole and this scares me because it could be a reality for me although I am doing everything I can to stay away from that. (Please don't tell me just not to do anything to get in trouble because I have been to jail before for something i didn't do and it does happen sometimes to people)

I am worried if this ever did happen because I have medical and if im in jail i would loose my medical because i wouldn't be able to go to my appointments to keep it so how would i get my T and also if my insurance doesn't cover T I would be broke in jail and have no money for it because I wouldn't be working and even if i did have money for it how would i get it in there? That's scary!

Also while I am on the subject I dont know what I am gonna do because my p o is an a**hole and I really want to start my transition now but i still have a year left before I am done with my parole. I know by law he cant do anything but in my reality there are things he can do. Im on federal parole and i moved from one state to another which was supposed to be a transfer but until i am done with my parole he can send me back to the other state at any time and I can't appeal it or anything. I can't afford to move at all. I just spent 3 to 4 thousand on moving to where I am now and now I dont have they money any more and he doesn't care. I can't wait another year to start T, I just can't do it! I was thinking I could just start T like 4 months before my parole is up and maybe I wont be that much different but I dont know. I wont be able to change my name legally until at least after my parole is up tho and I worried about that too because of the nature of my crime I dont kno if they will ever let me change my name even after parole! What would you guys do in this situation?

Based on legal sex. Sometimes they'll separate you from other inmates if you're in "mid-transition."

Jails are typically segregated by ability to penetrate.  Some facilities, like San Quentin, have areas for MTFs.  I have yet to hear of a specific instance of FTM-segregated prison facilities.

As for hormones, in some jails you can continue to get them, in others you cannot.  It depends on your state, your county and exactly where you end up.

As for the PO stuff...    You're screwed, dude.  If he sends you for UA and you come back with testosterone he could nail you for androgen use.  If I were you, I'd get in therapy and get a letter stating that your transition is medically necessary.  Get the same thing from your doctor, etc.  Get as many people with as many degrees as possible to state that this is something that you must do.  Do not give your PO original copies of any of this material, just in case.

As for the name change- again, this depends on your state- you will be asked if you want to do this "For a legal reason and only a legal reason?"  The correct answer to this question is- obviously- yes.  Since it is done in civil court, your record is typically not looked up, however this could be different depending on where you live.  Do not try to change your name 'til you're done with parole.

damn, i didn't even think about the ua issue. he never ua's me but he could at any time and i think he probably will right before the end of my parole so that's a good thing for me to take into consideration as well. It's really looking like I might have to wait the year but its gonna b real hard for me

my county has what they call the 'freak tank'. mostly for mtfs though for their safety.

SF has separate holding for MTFs as well, but nothing for FTMs.
