Hey guys, this'll be my first post (though I've been hanging around here for a while...). I'm FTM and at a point of real frustration with my parental situation. I've got parents who are still considerably unaccepting (although some progress has been made). Anyway, my point is that I'm at a point in therapy where I'm ready (and my therapist thinks so too) to start testosterone, but my parents have other ideas. He thinks I need to start thinking about how and when to bring it up, but I'm scared and clueless as to how to go about it without them going ballistic. I want to start as soon as possible, but I'm afraid that bringing it up will just make them mad and take a huge step backwards when they've just begun to inch forward... ugh...  Suggestions anyone???

How old are you?

Can you just wait till you 18 and you don't need their involvment at all in your decision? (I assume you need to be 18 in your country, it is in mine. I'm also assuming your 17 and would only need to wait less than a year).

Maybe you could ask your therapist to write a letter, lots of scientific stuff, like GID Diagnosis, Axis (whatever). Then you could show that to your parents. Either that or ask him or her if you can bring them to a session and break it to them.

I'm 19, but I don't have the financial means to get out of the house (nowhere close). And they have seen my therapist, and decided that they don't like him or trust his opinion. My mother already knows all about the medical aspects of things, she just doesn't want me to do it. She thinks its wrong and doesn't want to see me as male. I've already been diagnosed with GID. She doesn't see it as a legitimate condition, or likewise, hormones/surgery as an adequate treatment.

Legally, they nave NO control over your medical "choices" or treatment. You may, however, have to pay for your own testosterone. I don't think it's terribly expensive.

I was diagnosed with GID about 3-4 months ago. My mom also does not approve. I am 18 years old and I'll be starting hormones in November or December. My mom says no, but I'm doing it anyway. I have the support of my dad, but even if I didn't, I would still follow through, take a bus to Kaiser, and pay for it myself. I am running out of money, though. I would have to get a job to cover the full expenses.

You're right, they don't have control over me legally, but that's just it. They do have control over my sources of food and shelter... *sigh*

You need to weigh up the loses.. see if they come round. You dont need to tell them if you start T.
