'De-gendered' toilets spark row

Temporary signs have made the "ladies" simply "toilets", while the "gents" have become "toilets with urinals".

The changes are in response to an unspecified number of complaints from trans students who are uncomfortable using the men's toilets.

A university newspaper criticised the move but the student union said it was needed to tackle transphobia.

There are no figures on the number of transsexual and transgender students believed to be among the university's population of more than 35,000 students.

did you watch the video? they all come across as nobs.

however the person pushing for the gender neutral toilets did not help themselves when they had a go at the interviewer for using the phrase 'political correctness gone mad' as disablist.

As usual the student union type people have gone about it the wrong way, making an issue about gender neutral toilets, instead of just making gender neutral toilets.

As well as lots of pointless abuse, I also got this comment on youtube to my video about these toilets.

"THIS WAS HIGHLY EDITED BY BBC
as chair of Leeds met LGBT i strongly support manchester uni's decision.

Also well done for their womens officer standing her ground agaist an obivously bias BBC reporter

if the BBC was neutral like they are ment to be. they would have included the qoutes from students saying they were happy the toilets had been de-genderised."

I replied that the news had a narrative construction, however all reports are constructing this the same way, that it is dumb. The Metro news paper had an article laughing at the officer (who was welfare officer not women's officer - welfare being a grade above) making herself and her serious points look stupid by mixing up with absurdity.

I've never understood why single occupant restrooms were split male and female.  I mean only one person is using it at a time so what does it matter?

It's important because if a woman sits on a toilet that was previously used by a man, she might get pregnant.   That is how it happens, right?

and then sit on the same toilet.

Love makes a difference, but it doesn't explain all the children born out of wedlock.

They need to change the labels on toilets to "filthy" and "tidy" instead of "men" and "women."

The problem with trying to just change it and not make a big issue of it is that parents start calling administrators and makig a big fuss. At least, that's been the story on my campus.

Pulled up said abuse from my ytube account and chuckled at my own puerile-ity. Just so you know, I was banned before I had the chance to ask anyone's opinion on anything, let alone that.
Just thought I'd be honest about that.
