Samhain Meditation: Woman and Moon
Posted October 14, 2008

My task encompasses finding a balance, finding stillness. To cease being afraid of the sound of anything except the earth revolving through space. An emptiness that is full of everything, except the sound of my own mind and mouth.

Like that vision last night: Luna, just above the horizon, shining through low and misty clouds like a well-managed deus ex machina from a Bollywood musical. Yellow, light yellow, citrine, glowing and drawing all my breath to Her, a celestial beauty clothed in icy clouds startling me so that for a moment I could have died simply watching.

A beauty that I can never reach. Mother, You rise from Your bed in glory and surpassing beauty. No matter how my fingers long to set that stone in a silver setting and wear it on my finger, I divine the delicacy of my own fading beauty, gone more swiftly than a mayfly's wing crumples to dust in the grass.

I wrote that two years ago. I've spent the better part of that two years consistently not living into that vow, that wish. But, how does one learn to hush the flow of thought, to disconnect thought from speech and remain silent, allowing beauty to wash across her like waves washing a shore? How does one learn to stand on the strand, water cresting and falling closer, about her, beyond her, in the pull of tidal flow?
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
