I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and I'd like to try and find a job that's more accepting of transgender people. Ideally I'd like to go through the whole process starting with the interview as a woman to avoid the transition issues.

Is there a list of good employers I can check out? I know the city of SF has a very good policy, but there must be others out there considering the area. I'm a recent college grad with a background in mechanical and nuclear engineering, but I'm willing to do just about any job if it'll cover transition costs and keep a roof over my head :-)

Thanks!

I do not know if you are looking for a site that lists employers or not.  But I work for Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse and so does a couple of sisters.  Plus you are in California, they have policies in place to protect transpeople.

However protected I am legally, working with my coworkers during and after transition would be just about impossible. I think it'll be easier to start fresh.

http://www.hrc.org/index.htm - Try this website, I remember a list my GLBT group found on here showing the safest employers, and the not so safe ones. I can't find it though. It was geared towards gay and lesbian individuals I think, but the website is devoted to GLBT completely, so you can probably find what you are looking for if you search long enough.

I hope this helps ;)

You can search the list of employers for policies regarding gender identity and benefits:

Do you have to fill in all the fields? I tried to do an open ended search seeing if who covered HRT and got a big fat 0 in all 50 states. Surely that isn't right  :-\

I got 5 pages of employers when I tried it.  Under Transgender Benefits, click on Hormone Therapy.  Then in the drop down list box below where it says Eligibility, click the drop down arrow and select from the list Transgender Treatment Covered.  Then click Go.

I've spent the last two days dealing with all of the insurance carriers my company offers.

All of them, like most insurance carriers, haven't caught up with the AMA in realizing that this is a medically necessary procedure. I'm running things up fl->-bleeped-<-oles regarding AMA resolution 122, and working with my Benefits department in HR to try and get some action from health care providers.... but it seems like an uphill battle for one person to fight.

Is there some organized action being taken to sue an insurance carrier to cover this procedure?

BTW- I work for HSBC, and it was on that list of the 195 companies that had 100% rating - they truly have embraced my transition and been amazing about it.
