About a month ago I wrote that America is not now, and has never been, a conservative country.  Paul Rosenberg, Eric Alterman, and Think Progress have also done an excellent job swatting away at this meme.

But the best argument that America is indeed a center-left nation was penned without fanfare by one of the Republicans at RedState.com, nephewmiltie, in response to a post assessing the grim future of the GOP.

In just a few short grafs, nephewmiltie exposes the entire GOP economic fraud better than I've seen any progressive do.

The real importance of Obama's color is not that he is a minority, but that by seeing a minority publicly handle such an important and visible position, joe average will become inured to the idea that only white skinned people are capable of governing.

* Joe average is no relation to Joe six-pack or joe the plumber.

As someone who is rather left-center-right (you figure that one out), I agree we have never been a conservative country. But today's liberal could be tomorrow's conservative (in the pure sense of the words). We are reinventing ourselves as we always have. The GOP isn't doomed if they change as they and the democrats have done so countless times since the days of Lincoln and Jefferson. The GOP is on the wrong side of history right now, but I'm sure the smart ones will figure it out. Don't forget the upset in 1994...anything that goes wrong 2009 and later will now be, and I only quote for effect "the democrat's fault" in the eyes of Joe Average. Yes, no doubt urged by surviving GOP in congress. But just the way it is.
