COLUMBIA, S.C. - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

I have a better idea they should refrain from believing in the Roman Catholic church.

They should, just maybe, take a look at their leadership's track record. Let's see abortion is intrinsic evil. OK. But allowing the child to become 8-17 and then having a priest use them sexually would be ... what exactly?

Most of us don't have qualms with a particular "evil" provided, of course, it's done by our religious or our friends, or ourselves. Then it becomes something else entirely.

You are lumping all priests in that boat.  I would think this community would not promote stereotypes.

I am not catholic, not do I support any kind of pediphile....  But do not pretend to tell me all priests are pediphiles.

Now I might be reading you wrong but I think you just equated a supporter of abortion ( i.e. murder ) being future elect president Obama to pediphila...

Now that is just wrong.

Now as far as what the church or at least the priest, they are not supposed to be involved in politics ( although that hardly stops them ).  I believe it was not his place to make that statement to his congregation.

The priest's decision was out of bounds.  But a priest in Fairfield, CA apparently went even further: he kicked a woman out of church because she had an Obama sign on her car.

Sweetie, I don't agree with this decision, and I am not Catholic.  I do, however, know a number of Catholic priests who would never do these kinds of things.

I grew up in Columbia...

And most churches in Columbia are highly proactive in charity.  They have set standards regarding certain political issues but are in no way small minded.  They accepted me as a blatant atheist as well as several other Muslim transfer students from other countries who wanted to volunteer with them in a program we do every year called Homeworks.  Basically it's a week spent with a bunch of catholic late teens and young adults working on repairing houses of poverty stricken members of any religious denomination. 

The Catholics of Columbia don't deserve your ridicule, don't judge them until you've spoken to them at least.  I friggin hate Catholics but I happen to completely love the people who go to those churches in Columbia I've worked with.

I did 12 years in Catholic Schools, I can pretty much say what I want.

The Catholic establishments being discussed are the ones in Columbia, South Carolina, not the few you went to.

Churches that aren't involved in politics are pretty lousy churches.  Certain moral standpoints in politics have everything to do with you if you subscribe to a certain belief that has a stated standpoint on it.  Either you support that belief and are a member of that religion, or you don't support it and become some sort of apologetic.

As a former Catholic, I guess my opinion is worth no more than anyone's, but I will go ahead and add it anyways. 

A lot of us have been scarred by religion, and sometimes the pain never quite goes away.  I am still Christian, but I am tolerant of a fair amount of anti-religious venting because often the venter has good reason to be angry.  Humans sometimes do, in the name of God,  things which have bad consequences.

As someone raised by Catholic parents, I can back up the emotional scarring.  Sure, I'm stronger than I used to be, but I probably would have been better off with a more solid moral foundation so I wasn't burning so much effort on relatively small-minded issues.  But of course, I'm still dealing with garbage, because the majority off Christians like to throw their collective weight around.

As idiotic as it is, he is right to espouse whatever hateful belief he'd like... after giving up the church's tax exempt status.  Pay the price of admission like normal people do.
