I have the paperwork to change the dreaded F to a M, just wondering if I need to change it through the Social Security office first, or can I just go straight to the DMV with it? My name was changed years ago, through the ss office too, just don't want to waste time going straight to the DMV if I need to hit the ss office first. I'm in California, if it makes a difference..THanks.

I heard just DMV works, I swear I read it on some website somewhere, but I can't remember the website, and could be mistaken so don't go by my word alone.

What paperwork do you have? DL-328 or court order?

If court order- go to SS first, then DMV.

If DL-328- go to DMV ONLY.  SS requires court order.  You cannot obtain court order gender change in CA w/o surg.

its just to change my license, not birth certificate.

I got the paperwork from my Dr. says DMV in the upper left, CONFIDENTIAL in the middle..and just her stating her "patient" is male, in her opinion.

That's DMV only.  You can get a CA license or ID with that but cannot change the gender on your birth certificate or with social security.  For that you need a court ordered gender change, which you can't get without surgery in California. 

You've got a "carry letter".

In at least three states, California, New York, Washington, this will be sufficient to change the gender marker on your driver's license.

Changing the gender on your Social Security records theoretically requires completion of sex change surgery.
What qualifies as "sex change surgery" is a bit nebulous.

I didn't change it with SS yet; I don't think you can change it without a surgeon's letter.  I'm waiting until after top surgery in a few weeks to do that.  In my state all I needed was a therapist's letter stating that I was living full-time in my chosen gender.

So, I'm barely awake and a little confused. I CAN change the gender mark on my id, correct? Just not through ss until after surgery?

Yep no SS until after surgery.  You need to change BC before SS too, i think.
