OK, first off I dont mean to step on ANY toes here...this is simply my way of expressing this thought...so no offense to anyone, mmmkay? 8)

Im sure we have all thought about the fears of being "out" in public and the stigma attached to it (Moreso with MTF, of course)
and heres an observation I made last night.

I live in a small town hickville area..."mans man land" ya know?
My wife is on a womans dart league and we visit a new bar every week. Most being dumps. I would say half of the women on every team are VERY masculine, short dumpy hair, sideburns, beard shadow, male builds with breasts, etc. So....

this one girl stood out in particular to me, mens jeans, mans butt & legs...work boots, short hair (albeit had some wave) sideburns and a rough voice. Cussed like a sailor, smoked like a man and drank beer like one too. Now she did have breasts and some likenesses of a woman. Now, again...Im not dogging her, Im just making a point...soon.

Why in this world is this "acceptable" and no one thinks twice about her and her place in this world, yet a man looking fem is a bad thing? I had no makeup, no painted nails...baggy mens jeans, a adrogyne shirt that shows curves and some boobs and of course my long blond hair. A few of the "men" were looking at me like that wanted to do me in...

I sat and imagined what they would act like if I came in dressed.

OR, is this just a case of overthinking because of whats inside us?
Do we put the fear on ourselves? Does it really exists or is it all in our heads?

Thanks

because a woman dressing like a man is seen as an upgrade for her. a man dressing like a woman is seen as a downgrade.

Nero has it just right -  "because a woman dressing like a man is seen as an upgrade for her. a man dressing like a woman is seen as a downgrade."

I've always viewed it as the conscious or unconcious awaresness by males that they have the "power".  Most men cannot imagine giving up their "power" to emulate a female.  I think it also instills fear in most men to even consider giving up that power.

Well said Nero...

Nero is quite right (as usual).  Also any man that dresses androgynously is going to be perceived as gay by most people.  That brings on another set of prejudices and stereotypes.

You mention that many of the women on the dart teams are quite masculine with "beard shadow".  How do you know they are not crossdressing men?  >:-)
