ON NOV. 4, when CNN called the election for Barack Obama, the first African-American elected president, I, a middle-aged lesbian, jumped up and down, along with two straight friends and their 20-something daughter.

The next day, I came down to earth.

I thought of the wide-ranging hurdles the president-elect will face — from two wars to our grave economic crisis.

I wondered what Obama would be able to achieve. Would an Obama administration, make life much better for anyone, let alone gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people?
