Facial feminization surgery has been coming up a lot lately among my friends. Like any plastic surgery, it can be a marvelous thing, but it can also be a trap.

For trans women, there are really two reasons to get FFS. One is for how we look to others. In general, the world is not yet kind to us, especially to those who have features that get them gendered as male (some natal women suffer from this too—keep that in mind). Given this unfortunate reality, it's understandable that some would want facial work done. If someone has a prominent Adam's apple, that gets her the wrong kind of attention, and a tracheal shave can help a lot. If someone has a very heavy brow ridge or very square jaw, that can also get her the wrong kind of attention.
