Australia has emerged as a key backer of a United Nations declaration calling for the decriminalisation of homosexuality around the globe, prompting gay rights activists to applaud the Federal Government for taking an international stand on GLBT rights.

The declaration, to be presented by France and supported by all 27 European Union members, will be co-sponsored by Australia when it is presented at the UN General Assembly in New York by the end of this week. The declaration states that laws which criminalise GLBT people in 85 nations worldwide are fundamental breaches of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
