I've been trying to find a way to grow my natural hair out and into a more feminine style...Thing is, I work in retail management so I can't just do a 'surfer' style cut, etc at work.  Right now my hair is about 1 1/2 inches long...  Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch!

Go find a good hairdresser and explain your issue to them.
They will be able to help you find a style that allows you to grow your hair without looking scruffy.  :)

Hi, Mia,

1 1/2 inches? It sounds that your hair is shorter than most of men here. I think growing your hair at least for 6 months may be your first step.

I've been growing my hair for a while now, no-one really seems to care, and every time my mum brings it up saying "you really should get a haircut soon", i just sorta just worm my way out of it, hairdressers never seem to get my hair right anyway, last time i had a haircut the guy basically cut alot of my hair off the front and not alot of the back so i looked like i had a mullet :icon_anger: , that was a while ago and i actually do like my hair alot now,and i might get it trimmed at some point, but i guess if it comes to it i'll probably just end up putting my hair in a ponytail or something for work, i would like to get a more feminine style though  :-\ but seeing as i'm still not sure what i'm gonna do right now about things, and what some people are like around here, i think asking for a hairdresser to make my hair look more feminine or something along those lines may get me a few strange looks, i personally would be to nervous to ask such a thing.

This may be "outting" my real age, but a number of years, OK, the 70's to 80's the rage was UniSex hair styles.  The difference between a boy hair cut and his girlfriend's was that she used a bottle color on it, and he wore a beard under it!!!.  A friend of mine who did transition back then had his hair cut in one of them for about 5 months while HRT took over, and then had her hair colored platinum blond.  Find some mag's from that period and take them into a "styling salon" that specializes in long hair.  They cater to musicians and the like, but they will not hassel you, and your stylist may not be what (s)he seems.   8)

Ive been able to work retail no problems with my hair tied back. There are plenty of guys with pony tails out there and society usually doesnt have a problem with it(unless you are in the army or a cop or something)

Well, for one thing, you are a transsexual, not a "man", so you should not be in a situation that forces you to wear a so-called "men's" hairstyle. The very least you should do for yourself is work for an employer understanding about your situation.

I have always found that if you wear a really good cut/style all the time, hair length becomes less an issue with people. Go to a good hairdresser, explain that you're growing it out and want a great style as it does. I've worn good-looking women's styles (on and off) for decades. When my hair is cut and styled in a common style, even though it's common only with women, people seem move accepting of it.

I'm starting to think along these lines myself. Currently, I need a haircut and i'm thinking about telling my hairdresser to leave the back alone.

I cut mens and womens hair everyday and your idea is very common.  Many of my clients want to maintain their basic look but move toward a more feminine style that will still be acceptable in their "normal" life.  The biggest drawback is hair damage.  If you brush your hair a lot it damages the ends of the hair resulting in split ends.  The ends look pretty bad and need to be trimmed off.  If your hair grows at the rate of about 1/2 inch per month, which is what 99% of those of you with hair get, and you have your stylist rim the 1/2 inch of split ends off you will never end up with your hair and longer than it is now.

Tell your stylist what you are looking to end up with and take their advice.  Take good care of your hair, avoid sunlight on it and shampoo and condition regularly.  Brush sparingly, and have trims done every 3 months or so.  Remind your trimming stylist of your desire to achieve a more feminine style and we will do our best to comply.
