I saw a question on the transgendered site that has really made me think.  How did you come up with a name?  Does it have meaning for you?

For me, I actually chose my name when I was 4 when I was playing with some other girls.  Their is more to the story but would save that for another time.  I have used it all my life because of how it reminds me of my "dressing" past and it makes me feel feminine.  And, well, because I am just Michelle - freinds call me Shelly.

Gennee is short for Genevieve. I always liked the name so I chose it.

Zeo

Maybe it doesn't really count, but it's along the same lines...

My birth name is always something I've hated and one that ties me to a gender I don't identify with. I chose Zeo because that's what friends/people came to know me by online (I spend a lot of time online). What I love about it is that it's ultimately gender neutral, and choosing your own name means taking control of your persona, I guess.

As for how I came up with it...it was originally the name of a character in a story I am working on. Originally, because now it's mine. :D

For me, I chose Laura, which is close to my birth name, but it's also makes things easier to remember on the fly.  But, that's just how it happened to work in my case :)  For drag time, the last name has switched a couple times: Once for when I was in the Navy and once in this last year when I was doing stuff at an amateur night for a local club.

Jeez, I'm still having trouble coming up with a name for myself. I think once I go out and cross in public I'll have a visual persona set out for myself, and then a name will follow suit. Of course, I'm open to any recommendations friends of mine may have.

I was 5 or 6. We had moved and were attending a new church and going through the general greetings. A lady leaned over and asked me "and what's your name little girl?" I noticed a girl I'd met at school walk by and ran off yelling Virginia! Virginia! Then the church ladies started calling me Virginia and wanted to know why I didn't wear dresses. Of coarse my folks cleared that up. But allot of kids kept calling me Virginia to tease me. They didn't know I actually liked it. Marie is just a name I've liked and thought it went well.

Well my first idea was what my mother once told me would have been my name had I been born female, however the name didn't appeal to me much and I just ended up picking a name I had always liked. It was pretty simple for me  :)

You may want to consider a name that the initials match your male name.  For example, if your legal name is Ralph Mark Smith, The initials would be R M Smith, Then your fem name could be Rhonda Marie Smith, same initials.
There are many places that this can be used as identification.  For exmple, reorder another credit card for your wife or daughter as either Rhonda Marie Smith or more legally correct as R M Smith, in some cases you can even provide them with a picture in fem.  But I cannot stress too much, keep it legal and the card up to date and never use in an official capacity.  You dont need a charge of fraud.  As long as the banks get their money, they could care less.  This means you would only need one set of luggage with Initials.  Other places it comes in handy is if you have to sign something, a check, receipt, motel room, etc.
One other comment avoid often uesd names in the trans. world like Donna (mine), Michele, Karen and there are others.
