Is gynecomastia an intersex condition?

As I have mentioned elsewhere, I am not sure what I am.  I definitely have gynecomastia (large male breasts) along with a sense that I am not all male.   However, my external genitalia are clearly male and do work.   I have not yet had any genetic or other testing done, as I am not sure where to go or what to ask for.

Is gynecomastia considered an intersex condition?  Would it be proper to call myself intersex?

No. Gynaecomastia isn't in itself an intersex condition, but it is very often associated with intersex conditions. It can also be caused by various medications (Spironolactone, for example) or by endocrine disrupting chemicals in the environment. If you've had them since puberty though, you should definitely get a karyotype test done at the least, to see if you have Klinefelter's or one of the other genetic intersex conditions.

No, the condition is almost always related to a hormonal disturbance and occurs in males with excess female sex hormones in the bloodstream.  Cause unknown but some feel that disease plays a part i.e. Liver, thyroid, pituitary, testes, usually among pubescent boys and men over 50 and is often as a side effect of medications for varied conditions, poor diet, excess alcohol, misuse of drugs and environmental factors.

A full medical examination is needed to find the cause and to determine any treatment if resulting breast enlargement is a major cause of discomfort.

unless you are just really overweight.   Then the only medical condition you got is the dreaded noputdaforkdown disease.  A very common disease among Americans it seems.    ;D

Hi Jayjay,

I suggest you try dropping "gynecomastia" into Youtube for more (rather graphic) info. ::)

It is actually a surprisingly common to get as an effect during puberty, but less common to keep after your early 20's.

Humour? Americans eat well because they can. I as a Brit can eat well also but my Man Boobs are perhaps divine in design.  Now that I live as a female, my boobs make more sense and I can eat any American beyond the size of the final 'check' etc.....

No, putting down that fork was a cruel jibe though offered in good faith because some of us like food and others have difficulties.

My earlier post offered an insight, I had hoped readers would at least read it.

I can't add much to what has been said, except that you should be checked by a doc.    Find out if everything is OK.  Then go from there.  BTW, I have a couple of girlfriends who are now very grateful for their gynecomastia.  I just mention that to put things into perspective.

Best of luck!

Gynecomastia its not directly an IS condition but could be a related symptom. XXY symptoms include it so unless you notice another additional symptoms its a no (for now)

Get tested. Being IS its not so nice -_-

OK.  So what kind of a doc do I go to for testing on IS conditions?  Any recommendations for a good one in the Washington DC/Maryland/Northern VA area?

I would suggest the same doctor that deals with all other aspects of your general health, he/she will be in the best postion to make things happen for you.

Gynecomastia usually comes from having excess testosterone in your body, which converts some of it into estrogen. Like Bob in Fight Club who took steroids  :D
