The resistance we get to our transition is an attempt to keep us in a box.  In that box there are certain known qualities about us that won't rock the boat of anyone around us.

But there are people who have never known what life in a box is like.  They are free to travel through life without limits, walls or other barriers.  I used to think those people were the only the ones who fit the mainstream ideal of normal.

I was wrong.

When we live in a box, the box has walls.  Those walls can be moved in or out as we open or close our minds.  The more learned we are, the more we move the walls outward.  The more resistive we are to opening our minds to learning, the more the walls move inward.

I've always had a thirst for knowledge.  I love learning about new things.  I've always had an open mind when it comes to learning.  So why did I live in that box for so long?

It wasn't my box.

It was the box of family members, friends, co-workers, etc.  And I wasn't living in any of their boxes.  I was just visiting.  When I visited I accepted their walls as part of the condition of allowing me into their lives.  And since so many of the people I knew lived in boxes that were very similar, I didn't see I was moving from one box to the next.  I thought there was one box and it was mine.

When I refused to live in their box they had two choices, cut me out of their life or move the walls outward.  Now I realize that all along I was one of those free people without the box.  And by staying out of the box of others I am able to remain free.

That is why one should always carry a box cutter.  Just being who we are is a great box cutter.

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.

Julie...

...it took me a while to work out what you were getting at...

I sort of agree I think...at least the bit about us building our own perceived box from the expectations of other people we know.

Another way to put it is "Not in my house!"  "This is my box and I'm only comfortable in this little world."  When you visit you follow their rules or you're not welcome.

Needing to be accepted in their box is what keeps us from being our true selves.
