Cambridge - Frances Cardullo, the second-generation owner of Cardullo's Gourmet Shoppe in Harvard Square, died Wednesday. She was 68.

Cardullo was remembered at a memorial service in Somerville Friday as a strong willed, opinionated person who loved Harvard Square and her three children.

Cardullo, born Francis, surprised friends and family in 2003 when he underwent a sex change operation in order to live life as a woman. He changed his name to Frances.
